airpump removal solutions
I'm in complete agreement with you- from a purely engineering viewpoint the double alt pulley/belt solution is pathetic. It obviously works (to varying degrees if one believes the forum) in real life but if I deleted the airpump, I'd be looking for a solution similar (in concept at least) to yours.
Interested to see what you come up with.

alright. here's what i got. i machined down the bearing spacer a few mm to have it align just right. also took about a mm off the mounting flange of the bracket. which is a very sturdy, solid piece.

To my knowledge the water pump centering stud that protrudes from the water pump through the center of the pulley for the fan is actually slightly thicker to the S5 cars than it is on S4 cars. So a S5 fan could fit on a S4 waterpump/pulley but not the other way around. If the gilmer water pump pulley is only bored out for the smaller s4 pump it wont fit over the s4 one.

alrighty, so i figure i may as well update this thread since the task is complete.
so we have our first gen mpv power steering tensioner:
machined about 1.5mm or so off the mounting plate

now to get proper alignment, you have to machine about 3-4mm off the backside of the spacer that rides on the rear of the pulley bearing.
original spacer is on the right:
and to take up the space on the front side of the bearing, i used an old bushing i found laying around that fit like a glove (centre):

and here is the final product:
as you can see, the belt wraps the pulley opposite of the alt belt, just as the original airpump did

yea turned out not bad eh? i guess i kinda lucked out. i just dropped by the wreckers and gathered all the brackets and v belt tensioners i could muster in the matter of an hour. thankfully this one worked without much modification. ended up with a few pounds of scrap, but hopefully someone else can make use of this thread
