Air pumps necesity or extra weight

I have a 1987 turbo 2, i want to remove the air pump but not real sure how the air pump affect the opporation of the turbo or if any other mods need to be done after removal. Any helpful info you have is greatly appriciated thank you in advance.

A turbo doesn't have the bits that are actuated by air pressure (not that the S4 ones did anyway).

If you have catalytic converters, you need the air pump or you'll fry the cats in very short order.

If you no longer have catalytic converters, it's just extra weight.

HOWEVER, if you remove it you should get a dual pulley for the alternator, because the water pump & fan are driven by just one belt without the air pump, and there's not a lot of contact area for it.

cats are gone but what about the ports that the hoses from the air pump run to think i should just plug them up or leave them open to atmospheric pressure

If you remove the air pump you can remove the air control valve as well and just put a blockoff plate in it's place. Plug up the hole on the air box (sandwich baggie and rubber bands works, as does a hose blockoff thing from your local junkyard) to prevent an unfiltered air leak.

either or......i got my plates from ebay for $40 shipped but it's been awhile since i've seen it selling. if you're able to fabricate them yourself then i'd say go for it. could be cheaper

I believe they can be had for $10, or make your own, like I did, for free. Just find a small piece of steel, aluminum, whatever, and drill the holes in it.
