ive never heard of it making the car run rich? the only way it could make you run rich is if you left your cat on and that would destroy it, clogging it...and then it would be rich. but you have no cat so that won't be a problem.

Hey man thats the worsed thing you can do tot h e 89-91 models becuase the air pump operates the 5th and 6th ports and also the VDI, without the VDI you have noo power above 5k or 6k, so I put mine back on

He's turbocharged. Granted I have an 88..but I don't think there was 6 port operation on turbo cars.

You need to plug the one outlet hose. If you don't it will leak exhaust gases into the engine bay. And no turbo cars dont have the extra ports so if you dont have cats you might as well yank the airpump.

Yep, all Turbo's are 4-port's. No auxillaries or VDI manifold to worry about. After removing the airpump you may need to tighten the alternator belt. The airpump pulley helps to add tension to it. Mine started squeeling after removing the airpump. So I just tightened it a little and all is good now.

air pump removal on 2nd gen

Racing Beat makes a block-off plate to use when removing the air pump. They also make a DP and pre-silencer that is a bolt-on replacement for the pre-cat and main cat. It has a pipe and flange to connect to the pipe going to the six-port actuator for the NA engines. I have one taken off my 90 GTUs if anyone is interested. Only problem is it makes the exhaust pretty loud, even with the pre-silencer. I got tired of the noise and put the stock pre-cat and cat back on. Power isn't as good, but it is quiet. Also- you can fabricate an idler pulley to help prevent drive belt squeel when the air pump and its belt are removed. Use an AC pulley and flat iron bracket. Tightening the remaining belt works for a while, but it will eventually slip and start making noise. Interesting note- I had the pre-cat and cat removed from my GTUs for ten years and it passed PA state inspection every year. Non RX-7 mechanics assumed that the pre silencer was a cat convertor, since the RB system looks like a factory stock exhaust.

thx for the replies guys..

and yeah i was having question about plugging the outlet holes or not....
actually i installed like one of those mini-mini filter on that outlet holes..and made some very mean noise...sucked in quite a bit of air
hahaha

yeah mine's a turbo so don't think i need the airpump after i removed the cat and not planning to pass smog...

but this morning when i started my car...it did not idle as high as usual when u start it...(around 2500)..and then the rpm keeps falling and the engine shut down....then i turn on the car again and it's fine..
see anything wrong with that??

You did block off the hole in the air filter box??? If not you need to. Also...without the pump you should remove the ACV and block off associated plumbing (cleans up that side of the bay nicely). You can also remove the aws and egr valves and block them off as well. I did all this to my TII and all is well now!

I get just a little bit right on start up for less than 5 seconds. I think that is normal for these engines but not 100% sure. I am going to eventually do the ATF trick & hope it makes it go away

don't think removing airpump will give u more power..
but definitely a weight reduction...quite heavy unit

i don't think removing the airpump could take a long time, at most 20mins....but a lot of ppl suggest tighting the alternator belt etc after removing air pump belt...
