air pump question - to many "air pump" in search

I have an '89 Turbo II, is the Air Pump good for ANYTHING besides the catalytic converter? The bearings are going on it and I want to remove it.

No auxillary ports=no reason to keep it. With a TII, all it does is supply air to the cats. Pull it.

hmmm...

I noticed that the belt overlaps another pully on the right (facing engine compartment).

Is that a big deal or not?

(The belt seems to span from the airpump, past a main pully, and over what looks like a power steering pully or something.)

I think I will just make sure that the other pullies all still have belts attached.

Yeah, and Mazda spent the money to put an air pump on a car just 'cause they had some laying around - it has a function, my friend!

Yea, but without catalytic converters, what the point of having it? If there are lines that I can visibly see going to anywhere else other than the catalytic converter, then I will just remove it air-pump all together.

I helps pass emissions! outside of that; I'm not sure it does anything to aid in the performance of a turbo 2. The pulley you are refering to is the water pump. And it is a concern if you track race the car due to the belt slipping on the water pump pulley since the contact area of the belt on the pulley is reduced to a mere inch or so. If it is just street driven you should be fine. It may slip for a second at high rpms but unless you drive around at 6-7000 rpms for long periods of time then don't worry about it. If it bothers you get the dual alternator pulley and play it safe. This will let you run two belts over the pullies to increase the contact area. The alternator pully is cheap, and if ya got some extra change I would get it.

When you remove the AP, you also remove one of the belts that goes around the water pump. At high RPM it can slip and cause the cooling capacity of the car to be reduced.

Do a search on dual alternator pulley, there are several available.

Next time the turbo is off you can now pull & block off the ACV, along with it's outlet pipe & muffler. That will really clean it up under there..

There's no need to remove the turbo! The ACV is easily accessible for removal. To get to the relief air silencer you just need to remove the RHS brake duct.

For anyone interested a did a quick how-to on this thread.

FWIW I did the dual atlernator pulley mod this week. I got mine form a used repair alternetor/starer shop local. Basically the pulley off any dodge motor with a 2.6 will work..the alternator is way bigger on those cars, but the shaft and offset are perfect. Part number is WAI-24-83100. Basically any dodge 2.6 from 81-87 will work.

BTW I have a spare if anyone';s interested. Ill take $35 shipped for it.
