Air Pump Purpose
Air Pump Purpose
Ive got a 87 Turbo II... I just installed a Jspec engine in and i want to remove the air pump... but i dunt really know the purpose of it... i also got a set of block off plates and i installed them and i noticed that the airpump is in no use so i took that out... i also noticed one metal line coming from the stock wastegate goin into a vacuum line do i block that off with a plug or do i reroute this???
do you have a stock exhaust? or do you still have the cat? the air pump is necessary for the cat to function. i've been told, though never looked into it, that the cat will get screwed up if you run without an air pump. i dont know the validity, but its worth looking into.
air pump is junk if you dont care about emmissions and your state doesnt care. all it does really is blow fresh air to your cats and give your exhaust a taste of fresha air so it will pass emmission tests. try searching the forums, theyll be on there on a "how to guide" and go to the faq for other helpful stuff.
i wouldnt exactly say it "blows fresh air to give the cat and exhaust a breath of fresh air." it has a real purpose. its not there to dilute, it assists in causing a reaction between particles.
since your cat is hollow, its a piece of junk and has no use for the air pump anymore. i believe hollowing a cat is about a $10,000 fine. guess actually fines depend on the state. good luck.

The air pump keeps the lumbar support pumped, in special sport-package 7s.
Read the pump label -- "Do Not Remove..."

I guess another use for it is to pump air into the main cat, to assist in catalizing. The purpose of the catalyst is to oxidize engine emissions. It's another combustor.
