I have had some problems with my 1991 RX-7 convertible lately. I think they all share a common thread, but I'm by no means an expert. I'm just trying to piece together some information that I've come across, and would like some input if I'm on the right track.

About a year ago I had trouble getting it to pass emissions. The graph that got showed normal emissions up to about 3-4K I think (can't really remember), then it would spike. My mechanic finally got it to pass by bypassing the air pump control... I'm really not familiar the whole emissions control system, but I guess he had the air-pump blowing air all the time (for the test only....).

Also, my car had been having weird intermintent hesitation problems. In the high-rpms (above about 4k) the car would sometimes buck as if deciding whether or not it really wanted to give extra power. Lately however, the bucking has stopped and the problem has turned into a pure hesitation.

I took the car back to the mechanic for a tune-up and diagnostics on the above problems, and he found that the aux ports were not opening. He traced the problem back to the computer.

From the information I've read, it seems that there are a few things that happen at high rpms,
1. The aux ports open
2. The air pump gets actuated
3. VDI solenoid gets actuated

Is this correct? Do all of these things happen from the same signal? I'm wondering if the emissions problem I was having before was related. Perhaps the air-pump was not getting actuated? And I'm wondering if a solution for me would be to control these activities with a RPM switch. Any input would be appreciated.. please clear me up!
