You may wish to use the search function found in the upper right hand corner of the page as this subject has been covered quite a few times in the past.

However the long and short of it is dependent on what year and model RX-7 you have.

For example, removing the air pump on all FC's is a violation of federal (and some states) laws as well as will lead to pre-mature failure of the cat converter. It is also next to impossible to pass any sort of emissions testing without an air pump on a FC.

And removal of the air pump on an 89-91 non-turbo will result in the aux ports and variable dynamic intake (VDI) not working, effectively robbing the engine of any power above 4000 RPM.

In addition, the water pump and alternator tend to slip unless you go with a dual belt set up when removing the air pump.

The only gains from removing the air pump are a minor HP increase of 1 to 2 HP. Of course this is often offset the major looses of HP if the VDI and aux ports not working.

I does clean up the bay some, though. I think thats one of the reasons a lot of 86-88 people remove it.

What about on Turbo 4 port motors though. Wouldnt removing the air pump on them have no effect on engine power, as since where are only 4 ports, you dont need to worry about the other two opening, as they are nonexistant?

There are no aux ports on a Factory Turbo, so you would only have to worry about legal and emissions if you removed the air pump
