Air intakes, Whats a good filter and why? and what is this thing?
My 88 vert was owned by some guy in florida and when I got it there was already a big cone filter replacing the stock air filter system. It was pretty dirty so I bought a K&N recharge kit and cleaned it but I'm not sure that it is a very good filter at all. So I'm thinking of replacing it. Does anyone have any preference or suggestions? Also there is a little air filter on engine...its definatly not stock, does anyone know what that is?

the lil air filter is for the air pump it used to be pluged into the stock air box but when u remove the air box u gota do sumthin with that air hose so he put a mini filter on it
jst go to your local ricer shop and buy a cone filter DO NOT spend 100+ dollars on a intake, not when u can get the same if not better filter at a ricer shop or autozone. only thing special about the 100+ ones are they come with an adapter which u can buy on ebay for$10 or if u have a s5 u can jst slap the filter on and tightin it down. i got a ractive mesh screen filter with a "carbon fiber" heat shield for 20 at a speed shop. regardless of what most people say one filter really isnt anybetter than another, your not guna see a dramatic diffrence in the amount of hp diffrent intakes will give u so jst go buy one, if u wana see more hp make yourself a custom cold air intake, run the filter down to the front of the bumper

I have the HKS foam intake.....gets dirty alot, then I clean it up no biggie, and don't forget the "breather" for the air pump......I'm with Hitmang11...it doesn't matter what brand, just make sure you build a heatshield around it, and the adapters are on ebay.....

I'd seen a few post of the cold boxes and one that had a pipe come up from the lower part of the nose to feed the box. I was gonna play around with some plans to see if I could successfully do the Box and then try to make a cold air inlet to the box. If I can't make a cold air inlet I might just buy one of the headlight scoops (EXPENSIVE). Tell me if I'm being a total Noob, but is this any good or am I an idiot. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=38634

Just a quick note...the adapter on Ebay kinda sucks, because it goes straight from the circle opening for the filter, to the square AFM opening, with no beveled edges. The HKS adapter has smooth beveled sides which make for a very nice square to round transition. Now is this something that you will notice a gain inperformance from.....probably not. Does it bug the hell out of a perfectionist....yes it does.

All filters are not created equal. The same goes for AFM adapters. genuine K&N or APEXi is the only thing I would use unless I was completly broke and the stock air box blew up or something. Do not spend any money on the headlight covers they are worthless more than 50% of the time and you will not get much of a gain from them when they do work. I can sum up the two points against the headlight cover/heatshield designs "SunSet"< night pWn3Z joo and "Path of Least resistance" in this case the space between the headlight cover even when you cut metal and remove weather seals will allow all your air to go everywhere else other than the heat shield box. If your only going to buy a filter/adapter combo I suggest this: a genuine K&N filter and either an HKS afm adapter or the copy's that hIGGI makes and sells. With these you will have a good foundation to buy/make the rest of your intake setup. BTW I make cold air intakes. :-D you can PM me if your interested.

Which would be better:
Apexi, K&N, or the Zex air ejector thingy?

I've got a Bonez intake because the guy I bought the car from lived close to Rotary Performance, and they are truly obsessed with Bonez stuff. It looks like its pretty similar to the Apex intakes, and it seems like it works well. If anyone thinks differently, let me know.

blitz makes the best air filter because it's made of stainless steel, and you only need to run water to clean it. the others need oil, which then get sucked in the motor. not good.
