Air Intake System

Hey, I just bought a 87 RX-7 Turbo and I was told the first thing I need to do is to buy a new intake system. First to mind was a K&N system, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a cheaper system that works just as good. Basically I'm looking for the best bang for the buck kinda deal here. Also, where I can buy this from. Thanks!

best bang for the buck would probably be a K&N with an adapter bolted to your AFM. there are cheaper generic crappo cone filters...but i wouldnt trust them.

If your looking for your best bang for your buck, keep the stock airbox and get a full exhaust. All your going to do with an unshielded cone is suck in hot air from the engine bay.

Before you start throwing money at upgrades and performance mods make sure the car is running well, especially if the money is tight. Don't won't your money exhausted if something that stops the car from running gives out. For best bang and performance intake and exhaust should be done together though.

Just my 2 cents

Not on a turbo. If he did both, he'd be seeing higher boost levels than the stock fuel system can really support safely. Not to mention fuel cut, warm air being pulled from the engine bay leading to a greater chance of detonation on a nice hot day under full boost.

Well, if your just going to get a cone filter, I would suggest getting an apex1, they have been rated the best, and they clean the air better than all the rest. But it costs a little more that a K&N. Also don't even think about getting an HKS power flow, those things such, and they let alot of dirt flow threw the filter.

Yep, do your basic service first, Tuneup, change all your fluids, including anti freeze! Then do modz...Enjoy it, I pick up my 87 Turbo II TODAY! Can't wait to feel the boost again!

hey can i ask u guys something if your car isnt boosting at all just goin to 0 on the boost gage what could casue that would a messed up tid cuase that or no the emisstions are gone on my car but the cats were left on and the air box i dont know if the cats still have the stuff inside them or not but i only go to 0 plase help

Not true. The stock intake system isn't great, but there's no need to go ripping it out straight away.
Assuming the filter is clean, the airbox is as restrictive today as is was when new. The same is not true for your exhaust. Your 16yo cats are probably clogged and posing a lot more restriction than they did when new. The exhaust is generally the best place to start modifying. A forum search will get you heaps of info.
Replacing the airbox with a pod filter is a simple mod but it will have little effect if the exhaust is stock. It also won't have much effect if you don't ensure it breathes only cold air (like the stock set-up), because the gains from the extra airflow are offset by the losses from sucking very hot underbonnet air. A heatshield and a cold-air duct should be installed with the filter. Again, a forum search for these two items will find many relevant threads.
And as others have said, do all the basic tune-up and maintainence items first.
