Air Flow Sensor causing engine not to start?

Hey guys, it comes down to this, my engine won't turn over when I ripped out the Air Flow Sensor, the piece between the piping to the throttle body and my K&N cone.

Could it be that the engine is taking on to much air? Causing it to flood and not start?? Atleast that's what my buddy and me figure. Any Ideas? Thanks!

By "turn over", you mean the starter's not even turning the engine?

Since the ECU needs the AFM's voltage output to help schedule fuel (which happens when airflow opens the door), I'd say you're on the right track by assuming that a missing one (or even one sitting off to the side with the plug still attached) might be the problem...

Unless you have a standalone. You HAVE to have the AFM on for the car to run.

yeah i've learned the hard way, it's plugged back in, but it still won't start. The engine is turning but it won't ignite for whatever reason. I am assuming now the engine is flooded but we left it for like 10 mins and still did the same thing.

How long should we wait for the engine to unflood?

Pull the EGI fuse on the drivers side strut tower, then crank it over a few times for about maybe 5 seconds each time. Let it sit about 10 seconds inbetween cranking. Do this about 5 times, put the fuse back in and try again. If you have an 89-92, disconnect the negative battery terminal and hit the brakes a few times, then hook it back up and try again.

BTW, it should be noted that if the Air flow sensor sees zero air flow, there is immediate fuel cut (with exception to when the starter is cranking). This is a fail safe so that if you get in an accident and the engine dies, the fuel pump is immediately shut off.

So if the Air flow sensor is disconnected, the fuel pump would never actually have been running (except for when the starter was cranking).

Well I have been introduced to that EGI Fuse trick thing but you know that never worked for me , i use to have the same problem. Try this instead be patient and do not touch your car for 1 day or 5 hours, if its in your garage/ outside your house kool. Make sure you dont taouch it for a few hours or the whole day and then after that try starting again . I am not pretty well on technical stuff about rx7 but i have had my own share of its problem..

I've always had good luck with the EGI fuse. It's always something to try before letting it sit. Pop the hood, and look at the drivers side strut tower (just behind the battery) there is a fuse box there (black w/a cover on it) pull the cover off and it's the one closest to the engine.

i am thinking it's something electrical messing up the spark on the plugs, because my clocks on my aftermarket jvc deck and my dash clock both say 10am? and it aint 10 am and the clocks were working. Also you know the defogger button on your left hand side of the dash where the red light turns on when you push it? Well it is on all the time.

I noticed my power window fuse is blown but i don't see how that could relate.

Think any of my fuses inside my car could have anything to do with this?

EGI Fuse trick always works for me and I do it like this, have a friend remove the fuses, you get in the car, crank for about 5 seconds and at that point dont stop cranking but have your friend pop the fuses back in right away while the engine is cranking. Almost ALWAYS works for me.

i wish it worked for me, it doesn't even sound like the spark plugs are sparking. I smell lots of fuel so I am just gonna wait on it and my friends dad (mechanic) is gonna look at it for me.

I'll let you guys all know what the problem is and maybe i can post this in the FAQ section for problems eh? heh

well it was a couple things, the fuel rail was overwhelmed with fuel since the air flow sensor was unplugged.

And yeah that's basically it
unplugged the battery, it reset, everyone is happy
