Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I Think My Engine Blew!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, shut her down this morinin. No problems. Start her up today after work, won't hold an idle for ****, ehxaust sounds like "blab, blab, blab", has very little power till like 5kRPM (up from 3k), dies when I stop and am in gear. The thing is, it was PERFECT this morning. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH H!!!!!!!!!!

OH **** !

How many miles are on it? I thought you had a good strong engine.. are you running premix? I'd hate to think it's the OMP/Lines.

Get a compression test to make sure it's the engine. Maybe something else got fucked up (like air or fuel).

Jesus i take mine up to redline a few times each day to make sure carbon is cleared out. But all these engines just blowing in parking lots or 30mph in 3rd gear and what not. Im scared.....

It JUST rolled 101K. I just don't see how it blew just sitting there all day. It was AWESOME this morning before work. My buddy is on his way over. He thinks it is I blew my exhaust gasket. I for damn sure hope thst is all. Would a killer leak cause stalling? My a/f gauge says all is good, my oil pressure gauge is no different. All signs point to ok, but i am just sooooooooooo ******* scared.

Well, when i had ONLY my headers on (nothign after that), i had NO power until like 6k rpms. and it was LOUD as hell. Dont remember if it held an idle when stopped though, but i think it did.

jesus christ engines are going out right and left

Well, when it was cold, it would idle for ****. Then, when I got home, I left it running and it idles at it's normal post TB mod 1k RPM. The engine shook violently though. HOW COULD IT GO BY JUST SITTING THERE!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

The only thing i can think of is :

This morning, you somehow broke loose some hard carbon. Then when you started it in the afternoon, it got jambed and ruined the apex seal, most likely rear rotor...

But it now idles fine, the engine just shakes. If it blew a seal, would it not idle all silly? And would a blown seal DRAMATICALLY alter the sound of the exhaust?

Maybe cracked intake manifold? nah that can't be it...WAIT, didnt you have some problem with your exhaust studs or something? maybe the headers/manifold got loose or cracked or some ****.

Well, the I left my fuel cut switch off when I cranked it, and heard the even "fwap" of seals spinning in the engine. The header has the most god awful sound coming from it. Also, it is a bitch to get to start.

My buddy who grew up around engines says it dosen't sound blown...but he dosen't know rotaries. He says the header sounds like it has a leak. Also, would that cause:Hard start, shaking, and stalling?!?!?!?

Well, i've heard that hard start when hot = blown engine
and also doesnt idle when hot = blown engine. So if it idles when hot, i'm sure it's fine.

When mine was blown, it couldnt idle for **** when hot and sounded like a weed whacker. The entire engine and exhaust system shook violently and it backfired every second. had no power through the entire RPM band. also didnt make that 'thumping' noise as much when turning over. Smelled like fuel alot too.

Well, it smells like exhaust, makes a thumping noise when you turn the key (had my ear practically IN the muffler listening and it sounded like normal) It won't idle for more than 5 minutes when hot, hard start, power above 5K rpm.

He is back on. It is so weird. Every thing points to leak around header, but the whole won't idle for ****, and hard start point to blown engine. I got someone else to listen for the thump of seals, and he can hear em from like 10 feet away, so I guess no seals were lost. I am stumped.

Mommy, will you co-sign for a loan so i can get a TII? Man, if that happens, FCD and that is IT. Bone stock for me. I have too small a budget to do this any more!!

Debug time...

Did you scan the ECU for error codes?
Possible bad injector or sensor/meter? Loose wire? Wiggle the AFM(flapper door/plunger check).
Make sure that all the vacuum/pressure lines are good. Check the fuel pressure. Check the plugs/coils/wires/grounds/egr/o2 and everything else....

Start saving $$$ for a rebuild.

If she is dead, it's a loan, part out the N/A, and get a TII by the end of summer. It's just, the engine dosen't "feel" blown. Like it just feels ok, but mabye that is me holding onto a last shred of optimism.

Funny that you mention this. I just recently discovered the same problem with my 87 TII. I drove it in the morning and everything was cool, then later that day I went to start it and it could barely hold idle. So I drove it around the block and as long as I was on the throttle she was fine, however the minute I would let off she would bog then die. Now I have had a slight leak comming from the pre-cat but it never stopped the car from running. I had checked all my Vacuum lines and even replaced a couple; still no luck! Then I checked the BAC valve; BAC valve was fine! Very boggled! Check all the fluids and fine. OMP lines are filled with clean oil. I just don't know. I even replaced the plugs in hopes that it was foulling... nothing! So I know I need to replace my tank aswell as my fuel filter; so you can guess what my next attempts are. But much like your self I don't understand, why would it run fine in the morning and not later that day? I really don't know anymore! Did I forget to mention that I love my TII LOL!

Hmmmm. The header...I hope is leaking around it. I am pulling it off once it cools down to have a look see. All signs point to ok though. HAILERS and Ted, where are you!?!?!?!!?

Before you pull that header off, do the poor mans compression test. Pull the plugs and the EGI fuse, crank it and listen to the whooshes coming from the spark plug holes. That’ll tell you if it’s blown.
It does sound like a header gasket to me.

Yeah. All my tools are at mom's house, so I did the REALLY poor man's test and just left the fuel cut switch off, and stuck my ear in the muffler, then in the engine bay, and THUMP_THUMP_THUMP ... sounds just like it has since day one.

You got it. If it is blown, I am going N/A MR2, or MX-3. No more high performance for me, just reliable and cool looking.
