ahhhh crap

so the other day i aquired a '90 gxl that i thought looked amazing i looked under the body when i got it and didnt see any rust. Well today i found out. . . i was wrong. the passenger side next to the side skirt is rusted completely through (not to the point of being visible from the side though) theres no rust on the frame rail though and its not in the floor board so my question is. . . should i fix it. . . or ditch it? other than this its clean and the only thing that doesnt work is the speedometer

can you post a pic?
its worth saving if its not too big and if you have the option to cut the piece off a donor car and weld it on there.

That doesn't look too bad. It's a bit rough, but a skilled body shop should be able to take care of it for you. It'll be a bit on the expensive side though, since the carpet would probably have to come out. Maybe if you pull it yourself, then take it in. I'm not really sure on that, just passing on info I got from some people when I was looking into getting my rust boat repaired.

My floor in my old celica was so rusted my seat leg fell through.

I Covered it with a piece of sheet metal and put some rivets through it. I used self tappers to initially hold it up and in place. I had no problems after that.

god I hate rust!

Yeah if you pull the carpet up you can just cut out the bad crap, por15 the edges weld in some new sheet metal and por 15 the crap out of it.

It doesn't have to look perfect, its under the car.

THANK YOU YET AGAIN...

...for making my day with a completely brain-dead and retarded post.

1. cut it out and weld in a new piece or have someone put one up there.
or
2. get cheap clean shell and swap over
or
3. rivet in new floorboards so you can be m4dtyte like F&F. **** is fly when floorboards fall out(or when riveting new metal over the problem promotes more rust)

That probably also means that your odometer isn't working. Your car might say it has 70k miles on it while it really could have over 140.
Just something to keep in mind..

Yeah it will promote new rust if you don't spray rubberized undercoating.

Your an idiot for saying all this just because you dont agree with me.

holy crap that chassis has a lot of miles on it. Why not fix the speedo? The cable is probably just unclipped behind the gauges when someone tried to put some blacklight pink gauge faceplates on

Well to answer your question OP, if you are willing to deal with the trouble of fixing the rust and it's something that is not going to bother you, by all means keep it. If its something that will bother you every time you drive the 7, find another chassis, or sell this one and get another.

My turbo vert has rust cancer everywhere. It'll be a while till I can swap out the engine and everything into another shell. So I've got good with rust.

Your best bet is to cut and weld. I cant weld and alot of my parts cant be cut out so i do the following.

1. Sand down the area as best you can to remove as much rust as you can
2. Use naval (navel?) jelly or even better Eastwoods rust converter to chemically change the rust.
3. Seal the spot with a really good paint. Alot of people like por-15, I like a base coat of eastwoods rust encapsulator + there underbody paint. But any good undercoat should work.

4. Since I cant weld I have used small peices of alluminum to patch a few holes, and some bondo and that wire mesh stuff then paint over.

I have mixed feelings on rubber undercoating as I've noticed that where the factory coating has flaked off, it holds water and rusts worse.

Oh and don't just use rust encapsulator alone, it sux like that. The guy befor me did that on the car and alot of it just flakes off. SAND+CONVERT

Good luck.
