Aftermarket tach question

I've got a '87 TurboII in a car thats not an RX7. I am using stock ignition/coils etc.(and a Haltech E6K) I have a vintage VDO tach that worked on a turbo Corvair ('64, 6cyl) and a VW ('74, 4cyl). I can't get the tach to work. I took a lead off of the trailing coil and get a signal off of it when I use a multi-meter, and the signal increases as the rpms increase. Has anyone run across this before?

Thanks for the reply, but the alternator is in the charging system and has really nothing to do with the tach except to make sure that the tach has a supply of 12volts from the batt to run it. I haven't had the tach hooked up to the turboII before. I've been reading rpms off of my laptop/Haltech E6K

You have to set it up for a 4 cylinder. Some Tachs have 4cyl, 6cyl

I've tried the 2,4,6,8 cyl dial on the back of the tach. I'm getting a signal from the trailing coil and it increases as RPMs go up, but its not driving the tach. The tach is set up for a car with a points ignition system and this is electronic. (1978 tach)

On using the alternator as a signal source, I stand corrected. While going over a VDO gauge web site I found that this could be done on diesel engines.
