aftermarket speedometer
Before I even begin, I am fully aware someone is itching to get their flame on BUT, I have used the search button which, while it yielded results...did not answer my question. I even asked it very nicely but did not find the information I want.
Another thing, I know the gauges in 2nd gens are great but...if mine worked properly after doing everything I know to attempt to fix whatever is wrong I wouldn't be posting here.
So, with that said has anyone with the problem of a glitched speedometer been successful in using any of the electronic autometer gauges with either speed sensor 5291 or 5292? I also read on one post about a halleffect speed sensor that used a magnet on the drive shaft with some sort of sensor to judge speed. I am using a T2 transmission if it helps to know.
Also, I like autometer brand simply because I have never had any sort of problems with any of their products. I come from maintaining limited late model race cars which generally use them. I have been using them in my 88 since I've owned it. I also like the idea of having a somewhat custom gauge setup even if someone on here does not.
Anyway, it does not seem like any of the previous posts were able to answer this question except for "go out and buy an FD, buy something else, buy an fd transmission, etc."
I have thought about attempting to get my hands on the speed sensor from an FD trans before but would it be as simple as replacing it on a T2 trans? can this even be done? The best way I have of judging my own speed right now and for the past oh...year and a half? is by staying severely under the speed limit or riding behind people. I get nervous when I pass state troopers hiding on the median of the interstate.
Any sort of information would be more than helpful because at the moment I am at a loss. thanks in advance

I haven't done this myself, but a few years ago, TitaniumTT had a full aftermarket cluster (which I think was Autometer) and I had the same question about aftermarket speedometers. He said that he bought a sender from: http://www.speedometersolutions.com/ and it plugged right into the transmission. I would send them an e-mail.

It depends what gauges your going to run. Any speedometer that is electronic and not mechanical can benefit from it. You can also correct for larger wheels...
Usually you can pick it up for ~100$

Yes, I did get some info on this sensor thanks to the website Flash mentioned. I received an e-mail from Roger at speedometersolutions saying they sell a sensor for $98.50 that fits directly in place of the mechanical cable. He said they accept MC/Visa and am going to ask if they accept Paypal.
I asked him for a picture of it which he sent in reply the following image, sorry for such a small picture but, its what I have sitting in my inbox as well.

I'd suggest doing this ONLY if you havent any other way of fixing any problems with the stock speedometer. However, if this is the sort of thing you are into then I cant really argue with you because well, I personally think its pretty cool myself as well as seeing it as a solution to my problem. Thankyou any and all that replied with information, or interest on the matter.

Hmm this is making me think, i would love to have an all Autometer cluster and this could help. My last mustang had an Autometer Lunar cluster and the RX7 looks like it could use one.

Well, as far as the speedo gauge goes I think I may be going with a digital self calibrating type. However I decided this based on a few reasons. The gauge is self calibrating! It also happens to be about $100 cheaper than what I was initially going to stick with. Also, gives a somewhat "modern" look to the interior without making the rest of the car look out of date. The gauge will also go along nicely with my AEM tru boost as it is also a digital readout.
I figure all in all for the gauge+speed sensor is going to be about what my original choice in speedometers would have cost alone.
