Yes the reservoir tank (overflow reservoir) is still needed.
Most vehicles built since the 1970s have a coolant recovery tank, or overflow reservoir, in the engine compartment. The coolant tank is connected to the radiator filler neck by a hose, which extends below the coolant level in the recovery tank. The arrangement of the recovery tank, the radiator, and the hose lets hot coolant expand into the tank as engine temperature rises. When the engine is turned off, the engine and the coolant cool down. A slight vacuum then forms in the radiator that draws the coolant back from the overflow tank. As long as the radiator cap stays sealed, the system stays airtight, and coolant can expand and contract back and forth from the radiator without losing a drop out the overflow hose.

Technically speaking, the overflow tank, is just simply a plasic bottle, w/ a tube going in from the radiator, and another coming out of the bottle and directed towards the ground.
Summit Racing sells aftermarket coolant reservoirs.
The reservoir tank I currently have, had mold growing in it. The previous owner filled the system w/ regular water (no coolant), and had the car sitting for a LONG time. I tried cleaning it (w/ various cleaners), but there are spots I just can't reach. Also, the plastic has "yellowed" over time. So, I think I'm just going to fork out the bucks for a new OEM one.
