What excatly do these aftermarket intakes do VS stock?

Just a simple point form anwser will do..

eat wallet. oh... and remove air restriction from the stock air box. there may be a few that claim cold air too, but unless they are piped to an atmousphere isolated from the engine bay entirely its easily debatable.

On my Celica,I have the factory intake system,but I have a drop in OEM replacement K&N filter,and on the front of my air filter box,I drilled a few holes in it (the filter sits on the top,so the air coming through the holes comes in the bottom and then goes through the filter). I would have used PVC piping to make my own intake tube,but it does not come in half sizes. However,just with an OEM K&N filter,it made a HUGE difference in acceleration,throttle response and even my fuel mileage.

I have been told that sometimes it is smarter if you are doing a cold air intake or custom intake,to leave the factory air filter box and use a K&N filter. This way,the filter is covered by the box and not allowing power robbing heat to get sucked into it like an open cone filter would. So from the box back,you replace the tubing so it doesn't have the baffles in it which restrict air flow.

well, it's different for a turbo car. doesn't necessarily have to be a cold air intake. afterall, it's about to enter a very hot turbo and then compressed to make more heat. so i figure, what's the point in cold air intake, when it's gonna get extremely hot in about 2 feet. but my turbo spools better and boosts more with it so i don't care.

This is an example of a TRUE cold air intake. It routes the intake from the engine bay (which can see temps over 180 degrees inside) to under the bumper (ambient air temp).

Here is a pic taken inside the engine bay, looking at the front of the vehicle.



Oh, btw... these are "Az-Tech Rotary"'s cold air intakes.

To compare temps... he did tests.

With OEM equipemnt, at the throttle body, the intake temperatures after a few minutes of driving, was over 120 degrees. With the cold air intake, it never went above 95 (from heat soak at a stop light), and was USUALLY (above 20 mph) around 70-80. (On a 63 degree night)

I'm currently assembling all his intake data and such to update his web-site (I'm his web-master).
