After 2 yrs of ownership, finally doing maintenance; tips and hints?

well, i bought this 1990 GTUs back in the summer of 2003. i found it in this thread;
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ight=gtus+ebay

no one was sure what it was, but i verified the authenticity when i went to check it out. i bought it for $800 and drove it the 3 hours from west palm beach to St. Petersburg. the only problem it had was the voltage regulator on the alternator. it would stop charged on the ride home so id pull over and tap it w/ a hammer to get it to begin charging again. after installing a new alternator, i drove it for almost two years without a hitch. this car has been flawless and has been the single most reliable car that i have personally owned. ive only put gas, tires and oil in this thing. it starts, runs and drives without a hitch... till the other day.

coolant would dissapear over time and the buzzer would go off. i would give it coolant and always wonder where the coolant went. i figured a bad coolant seal because id never see drips or puddles. the other day, i found out that it was a hose, much to my releif. it was the TB coolant hose that runs from the rotor housing to the TB. yay! i get to tear off the intake and replace a goddamn hose

the other thing was that my 6PI was non-operatonal. the actuator rods are seized in the bushings on the LIM... so im eliminating my 6PI, per Adam/Mazdaspeed7 and probably port out the UIM and LIM as well. ill be installing an ACV blockoff plate as well. as far as the TB, im doing the full blown "MOD" and bypassing the coolant lines.

the only mishaps so far are torn gaskets, broken vaccum lines and one broken oil injector line. everything else went along smoothly. so, my shopping list so far is;

VDI to UIM gasket
UIM to LIM gasket
LIM to engine gasket
(1) oil line
4mm silicone hose (may have some leftover, have to check)
BAC gasket
ACV gasket

now, since im going to remove my 6PI, and pulling the seized rods... is there anything specific i should do to prevent stripping the little weiner phillips head screws and install as a blockoff plate in place of the flanges?

also, since the ACV is leaving, should i remove the relays on behind the PS pump, or let them chill if they arent hurting anything? i dont mind leaving them there if it wont hurt anything.

id also like to remove my EGR valve in an effort to keep my intake manifold from getting carbonized and sludged up w/ PCV vapor and fuel residue. im cleaning the manfolds and id like them to stay clean this time.

and if there is anything else you guys can think of that i havent mentioned or that i should be cautious of, speak up. id like some input from other Points of view.

thanks guys
chris

ay Yo. i go out to tampa, but i usually take my supra or ride out w/ fellow supra owners. so if you go out and see a bunch of supras, chances are that im somewhere in the mix.

my S is far from being presentable. plus, it eats gas like nobody's business....goddamn 4.30 LSD.

i also ported the **** out of my LIM and UIM. i removed my 6PI actuator rods and bronze guides. i just used a spare bolt that i had laying around... from a Civic/integra intermediate shaft mount. i hammered the **** out of them and they popped right out. after that, i cleaned out the recess, applied black silicone RTV and installed a pair of Dimes. i siliconed the top side of the dime and remounted the 6PI actuator rod flange. when i ported the manifold, i cut down the 6PI rod guide down to the wall of the runner so its flush. the port work should flow a bajillion times better. im so anxious to see what it feels like. im going from a bone stock car w/ working VDI and nonworking 6PI to a car with ported manifolds, TB mod and no 6PI. this mofugga should scream all the way till redline, instead of dying out at 5000 like before.

I just gotta say that the car looks so clean, that it almost looks like a toy in that picture. You'll enjoy it all opened up, I'm sure. Just don't spend a lot of time under 2 grand...

That is all

My GTUs used to get 31mpg before I threw a GT35R on it.

How is that possible? They only got 25 mpg on the Highway when they came out.

thanks Wonko... its just a pic that my sister took when she was visiting us... i blurred the background on PS7... its all natural

J-rat, i thought about an S5 T2 swap... but i want to retain some semblance of stock w/ this thing. im going to try and get my friends 100% original 89T2 w/ 74k on the clock and just start w/ that. at that point, this thing will be up for sale *hint hint*

this car gets horrible gas mileage w/ the revised 5th gear and the 4.30 rear end. 80mph at 3800 SUCKS. 1st gear is almost useless and i have to shift SO much. but hey, its 1 of 100 from 1990 and its all good!

80mph should be @ 4k rpm. And from the factory, they weren't setup quite the most efficient way possible.

no, 80mph is a hair under 4000rpm. i know it was supposed to be a track car, not for mileage. i love it though, w/ the suspension and the brakes and all. hopefully w/ the gearing and these mods, itll pull to redline.

Your tach or speedo is off. 80 is 4k rpm.
