AFM question

ok, i know there has been a lot of talk about this in the past, but has anyone found a way to improve the stock AFM... with stock ECU... or has anyone found any replacements from other vehicle types (that actually work)....

reason im asking is because im gonna be porting and cleaning up my intake manifolds today, and cleaning my aux. port actuators, but i feel that with the stock AFM, i will see little or no gains

you should still see some gains even with the stock AFM. I'd just run a CAI setup and be done with it...

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Yes, under two specific circumstances:

1. If you can find an HKS VPC. It is designed to replace the AFM with a MAP sensor. Very rare, very expensive, much easier to pop your engine then if you had the AFM.

2. If you have some electronics knowledge, and can work with microcontrollers, you can home brew something without too much trouble.

Actually there is a relatively cheap and easy way. Read this if you're keen (you need to be a member).

I see it wouldnt be as easy as a capacitor in the right place. Would it be possible to just wire it open, or would it make u run too rich? What about leaving it hooked up but just removing it from the intake itself? Too lean? Just throwing up suggestions.

Do you even know what the airflow METER does? (Yeah, that was a clue...)

No, they do not have a hot-wire mass airflow meter. S4's have a flap AFM, S5's have a sliding-cone AFM. These two designs work exactly the same way.

Can you post the article? I'm curious as to what it says, but have no time or reason to join yet another forum. Or at least a summary?

It's not a forum. It's an online magazine. Cost? Cheap. Tons of back issue articles. If he posts it for free on this site.........I'll snitch. No free loaders allowed.

It's a big two-part article with lots of pics and some links. Too much work to copy it in a useful way, plus I'm sure they'd be less than happy about their pay articles being posted on open forums.

Basically it's an AFM bypass that diverts some of the airflow around the AFM, and then uses a DIY interceptor kit to correct the AFM's output. It works perfectly, and on this car reduced pre-turbo intake restriction by half.

Yea same. The afm is just one giant resistor, so I mean if you can make a box that does the resisting part, in wich it tells the ecu how much air is flowing via the flap position, and make a seperate channel for air, thats pretty sweet.

I wonder if the box can go beyond the stock afm values, as in you can compensate for much larger airflows by programing the box to give a larger resistance signal than the stock one was ever designed to do.

Thx NZ for the site, I'll have to subscribe as well
