I tried it after the intercooler (FM). Mild increase in turbo noise and slight decrease in lag.

When modifying the intake for FMIC it seems to me like passing compressed & intercooled air through the AFM would be more efficient:
1) More air volume for the same pressure drop.
2) No wasted fuel during closed throttle blow-off.

1) Volumetric restrictions don't care where they are placed, they still restrict; top end power will be the same.

You definately want to put it AFTER the FMIC... i don't think the AFM is going to like the 2-300 degree temps its going to see if it's inline BEFORE the IC.

the biggest difference i noted was when i ditched the thing all together. (haltech)

At ~8PSI you are pushing 50% more volume across approximately the same pressure drop = less relative loss.
This effect diminishes at higher pressures, but up to 1 Bar it's fairly linear.

Keep in mind that the S4 (and I believe S5 as well) AFMs include temp sensors. Also, it has been debated whether the S4 AFM will stand up to boost pressure in the long-term.
