AFM problems.
I've been tracking down why my fuel pump cuts off when it goes from "start" to "on" from the beginning I knew it was the AFM but I wasn't sure why. I figured it could still be an air leak not pulling enough vacuum to get the sensor to trigger, but after tracking down everything I really don't think it is. I removed the AFM and it idles fine and seems to be fine in general. I started it and checked the boost guage and it was still reading vacuum, although I haven't been able to run the car and tell whether the boost guage is functional or not.
What does a fried AFM look like? Are there any tell tale symptoms that the sensor is out? When removing the sensor itself would there be any slack to wires or not? I've got the screws off and it doesn't want to come out easily, so I am not going to force it.
How much is a used afm sensor?
thanks,
Dave

Since it was working fine prior to going down 3 weeks ago, I'm not positive it is the AFM. I just tested something new.
I started it up and idled it with the meter on there, and once I plugged in the sensor itself the car died immediately.
Any ideas? It could still be a vacuum leak, but I doubt it.

If you jumper the yellow check connector by the RHS strut tower you'll bypass the AFM safety switch. If that fixes the problem then the switch is definitly broken, and you'll probably have to replace the AFM. Repair might be possible, but I've never done it myself so I don't know if it is.
Note that if jumpering the plug works the car will be perfectly drivable, but will be missing an important safety feature. The safety switch stops fuel being pumped out of broken fuel lines if you crash. Replace or repair the AFM ASAP.

I had been blowing smoke through my intake to find and air leak and none were showing up. So I pressure tested the system and still nothing showed up. I noticed a crimp in the AFM wiring itself so I pulled that apart rewired it and plugged it back in. voila!
Thankyou so much for all of the help you have given me throughout this process NZ. You must've gotten 20 PMs from me through all of this stuff.
Cheers to you, and my car is running fantastic right now .
