Advice on an N/A FC '88 GXL? Please?
I've been reading this forum for months now planning on purchasing my first RX-7 and the time has finally come, somebody in my immediate area is selling a 88 GXL N/A FC. I was wondering what specifics should I get worked out to decide if the car is worth the 2000$ price tag.
I've done a few searches, but could not come up with answers for my specific purchasing worries for an N/A so I'd really appreciate some advice from people with much much more experience with rotarys then I.
So far I realize I will need some sort of compression test (but by who? mazda?), and a Car Fax report. What else should I look for? How would I test for these things? Any exterior problems I should be aware of? Anything aside from the rotor housing, rotors, and Apex seals I should look for?
Yes, I am college student with no funding, and this will be my first car that is all my own, so I really want things to go without a hitch. I am prepared to do a lot of application of what i've been learning reading this oh-so-helpful-what-a-god-send site, but I'm a bit squimish about spending all my money on my dream car and having things blow a nut through the rotor housing of my head(AND WALLET!).
Any helpful responses MUCH appreciated!

Yo,
You're on the right track. Compression check and check for the second gear synchros getting crunchy. There's some "How to buy an FC FAQ" around somewheres...someone should post it. Keep using the "search" function, this question does come up a lot.
$2000 sounds like a good price for an '88.
Good luck and I'm sure someone will post where the "How to buy an FC" is located.
An NA FC is a great first car, just do the usual first maintenance stuff, plug wires, plugs, belts, fuel filter, change fluids in tranny and diff to Redline and you'll be good for miles and miles of smiles!

Get under the car and check for major leaks. Examine the exhaust system, particularly the mufflers. These things are bad expensive.
Check the shifter for sloppy movement. The cure is about 30 bucks worth of bushings from Mazdatrix.
Missing or broken interior trim pieces can be very expensive to replace. Check the antenna for proper operation. This is about a 50 dollar item from Mazdatrix.
Look the car over, make notes on what needs repaired or replaced, come home and look the parts up on Mazdatrix's web site. Use these prices to bargain the car price down to a more realistic figure if needed.

Still searching... found a gold and white 88 GXL but the gold one had low mileage and nice paint and got snagged up b4 I got there. Checking on the white one... I hope their judgement of fair condition means good compression... ^_^
