Question Adjust Throttle, New Tach, Raise RPM Redline. Is this Possible and/or safe?

I have an 88' N/A and the redline, as all you guys know, starts at 7K and ends at 8K. I recently gutted my cats and put a K&N in it and now it revs to 8K without a problem at all, where as before it felt like it had a rev limiter on it. What i wanna do is put an aftermarket Tach on and adjust the throttle cable so my Redline starts at 8K and ends at 9K or starts at 8.5K and ends at 9.5K. Is this process this easy? Is it safe? Have any of you done this before? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanx.

You dont need to adjust your throttle cable to be able to rev higher. I seriously think youre just wasting your time revving that high. I dont think you have enough mods to make it worthwhile to rev your engine that high. Now for the technical part. The stock redline is at 7K for a reason. The engine internals on the 86-88 block were not made to rev past 7K for any amount of time. Not saying youre going to blow up an engine if you take it over 7K, but youre risking a lot of damage to the engine revving past 7K for extended amounts of time. The rotor bearings can walk out of the rotor, the edges of the rotors can hit the side housings, etc.

Spinning a rotor or flexing the eccentric shaft aren't an issue until almost 10K. At that high a rev, you deserve problems.

All that aside, the 88 has a fuel cut around 8100 rpms. Unless you get the computer upgraded or buy an NA redline fuel cut eliminator (yes they do make them - for road racers), no mod is going to take you any further in the rev range.

the only modification that you will ever do to your car that will necessitate the need for a raised redline is Porting. If your motor is not ported you should not even consider this.

ok, cool. You guys answered my question. I would just like to roll up next a ricer and when they ask me what my redline is I can say it starts at 8500RPM's, that would kick ***. But, i dont wanna risk ruining my engine for it. thanx a bunch.

When i was daily driving a Peripheral port engine/with 150 shot of nos....the motor started making good power at 5k. But at 7k, it was a total different strory. When shifting into 3rd, it would not spin...but blow the tires off. It was so much fun seeing the peoples looks when they asked where i shifted at. I'd just tell them in a relaxed way.. "Ohh...usually by 11k. Or something close to it." There mouths usually dropped a couple inchs.

It was also alot of fun when you'd be adding the pre-mix (mobil 1 10-30 sythetic.) before the guy would put the gas in. And he'd be yelling at ya "IT DOES'NT GO IN THERE!" I'd be like all "It does'nt?? Well where's it go then??" It would be so hard to keep a strait face.

JFYI, stock steel apex seals are safe to (ones that are fairly new.) 8,500rpms. However the water pump starts cavintaing around 7k i beleive. Unless you have some pulleys or something.

Sorry for all the rambling. CJ
