Actuators/NA
I bought a '86 NA and just today saw that the port valve actuators were stuck in the closed position. I got them unstuck and by hand they operate smoothly.
The problem is I don't think they are operating while the car is being driven(3800rpm). I tried the trick of putting heavy grease on the actuator shaft, driving it, then stopping and looking to see if the grease was moved(it wasn't)
The haynes book only really talks about the actuators that are run by the airpump and not much on the ones that are run by exhaust. Anyone been through this before? Whats the first place you start to look to fix the problem(and the next?)

Thanks, thats a very informative web page, but my actuators and port valves rotate smoothly. The problem is they don't open at 3800rpm(I have stock exhaust).

Do you have the small vac looking hose connected to the small pipe just aft of the rear actuator/?? Here's a picture I stole. The hose is black in this picture with a rusty clamp on it. http://home.earthlink.net/~burntoast...xports_acv.jpg

Here's an alternate way of making them work http://home.rmci.net/panther/6PortSolution.htm Actually that is really too expensive of a way to do it. In his diagram, in place of that black box thats rpm activated, put a solenoid valve like you find on the left hand side of your engine(you know, the ones that have blue, orange, grey etc connectors on them) in the place of the black box. Then run two wires from its connector into the back of the BLUE relief solenoid connector. What happens is that when you hit 3500 rpm the air is ported from the air pump, thru the now open solenoid valve, to the acuuating nipple aft of the rear actuator. Cost is about 5-10 buck max. Those solenoids can be had at the wreck yard for peanuts. Or there is a way to use the solenoid with the orange connector if you do a simple reroute of the fuel pressure regulator vac hose. EDIT: To clarify, its the electric solenoid and rpm activated device that are not needed. Two black boxes.
