Accidentally left key in on position all night. now it won't start

dam junkey monkey that sucks my ignition is messed up to... i gotta replace it but havent had the time to do it and since i just got the car i gotta spend the money in getting it registered =(

what gear were you in when you tried to bump start it? 2nds your best bet. I can't really see how a relay or fuse would burn, as the ignition's in the on position when ever it's running. get a voltmeter and make sure your battery's charged...make sure you got red to positive, black to negative...I know it sounds stupid, but if it's at all dark, it's hard to see a black + on a black battery. seeing as its cranking, it sounds to me like it just may be flooded. do as i stated before.
Take your plugs out and inspect them, if covered with gas then your engine be flooded.

OK... I'd bet anything that it's flooded.
Your injectors are just a little bit leaky, and having the car on all night kept the fuel system pressurized, and just doused the chambers in gas from leaking.

Here's a failsafe unflood procedure-
First, pull the EGI fuse under the hood, by the battery.
Pull all four plugs, and squirt some motor oil into each hole. (lower one iff possible) Rotate the engie a bit and keep putting oil in to make sure you have all chambers. Then crank the engine over for a few revolution, just to clear the oil out.
Make sure the plugs are dry and put them back in.
Don't forget to put the EGI fuse back in.
If it doesn't start up after this, pull the plugs again, dry them off, and you will have to pull start it.
Use first gear for the pullstart. It might take a second or two of turning..
The same thing happened to me.. the whine you hear is actually the engine turning, (not just the starter) just with no compression.
Good luck! It will start eventually with the pullstart.
If you dont' mind pulling the thing for a block right away you can skip the whole first step about the plugs and oil... it just makes it easier, and it's possible you can start it withuot pulling it all after it's oiled up.

You know don't get all crazy about getting a brand new ignition just cause your keys come out.

My ignition has done that since I bought it 4 years ago.

While I haven't experienced your problem exactly........the one thing that really pissed me off once
was when I took the keys out to unlock my front door while the car was still running. I was in a hurry.

Then I jumped back in and blazed to boulder.

Get to boulder and park.....****! No keys.

Yes its most likely flooded. Since we ruled out battery (u replaced it) then it is probably flooded. Good luck!

It is possible to burn up ignition components by leaving it in the "on" position. My dad fried the coil because it was left "on". I think the motor just stopped in the right position that the ignitor was given the signal to fire so it was constalty trying to fire the coil. Any way, a new coil fixed that. I would check for spark if I were you.

On 2nd gens, if they they're flooded, can't you just keep the gas pedal floored while cranking to shut off the flow of fuel?

if your pull out the injector relay, you can turn it over for a couple seconds to clean it out...It's worked for me before but if your plugs are wet too, you should dry them as well.

Injector relay?
Either pull the EGI fuse, or go in the back of the car, underneath the caropet in the hatch is a plug that goes to the fuel pump, unplug it.

Havn't you done what I outlined in the earlier post?? It's flooded for sure. Check for spark if you want....

And no, only on 89+ can you put the gas to the floor to unflood it.
