AC vs No AC: Difference behind the dash?
AC vs No AC: Difference behind the dash?
The question I have is about the AC evaporator in an S4 FC. My car is an '86 GXL that came with AC, and I am in the process of removing it.
With the glove box removed, you can see the AC evaporator housing and the fan/blower. I have removed the evaporator - this is what I'm talking about:

Now, with the evaporator gone, you can see the empty space left behind in it's absence. This pic is taken from the passenger seat with the glove box removed. The holes in the fire wall are where the AC tubes go to the condenser and pump.

The question is this:
On cars without AC, what is in the place of the AC evaporator? Is it simply the same plastic "box" without the "radiator style" assembly inside it? Is there just a simple hose that connects the fan motor on the right to the whole vent system on the left? If you've ditched the Ac in your car, how have you dealt with this area?
Thanks!

You have to keep the evap case there in order to use your heat. If you want to remove that case then you will have to remove your blower motor and air mixer case because there will be no use for it with out the evap case.
On my car for now, I'm running just the case. Once I get my rebuild/bridgeport and 42R, i'm no going to be running a heater core, so I'm pulling everything behind the dash and relocating a lot of things behind there like the coils and other electrical stuff.

Sure, there needs to be a connection between the blower and the heater core - so something has to be there. The question is, do I just leave the evaporator case and plug the holes left by the tubes coming out of it, or is there a "tube" of some sort that came on the cars equipped with no AC in place of the giant evaporator assembly?
If non-AC cars had a different connection from fan to heater core, it would be easier to pick up one of those for a couple bucks at a scrapper than it will be to reuse the giant empty plastic evap case... you know?
You could always just remove the guts from the stock housing, tape over the holes and replace it.
That's what I did and it's fine.
You may have better luck in Canada but finding the "AC delete" duct in the US is practically impossible.
