ac recharge w/r12...??$$

Anyone know the going rate to recharge the ac system. Please don't say take it out. I'm old and require some luxury. Also I don't want to go to 134, I did that in my FB. It was OK at hiway speeds, but not in town.

You are correct to use R12 for best cooling.

My 1990 vert has R12 in it and it will freeze your buns off in the city or highway.

I you have an epa 609 license, you can buy R12 at Napa for $25/12 oz can. It takes about $75 for the R12 to fill your car from a deep vacuum. ( I think 28 oz or so, but whatcha gonna do with that partial can. eh?) You spend about $36 for 134 and it doesn't work very well unless you spend some bux modifying the system.

No contest.

I can also tell you that there are some members on this forum that are as anti-R134 as I am who will swear by Freeze12. It is a blend that works nearly as well as R12, and you need no mods to make it work well.

Just make sure that your leaks are fixed before investing in new gas.

Good luck with it.

I don't know whether or not to invest much in the ac, I know it will be a long hot summer without it. But I am looking to sell the car this fall. Of course it will be worth more with a working ac system. At least it would to me.

R-12 runs about $35 a pound here.

My car leaks about a can a year so no big deal. I just top it off when it warms up. I got my license online for $20 so I can buy R-12. It took about 45 minutes to sign up and take the open note test.

I had bad luck with Freeze 12 - ate my compressor. Of course, the instructions say not to mix it with R-12, just that it is compatible with R-12 oils. I didn't evacuate the system. I still think Freeze 12 sucks *** compared to R-12 during the few months I used it.

If you don't feel artsy/craftsy and want to have it filled by someone else they have to repair your system BY LAW before filling it. So any leaks will have to be addressed. Then count on $35 or so + markup for the refrigerant.

where do you go online to take the test? I come from a farming family and we have a modified compressor that we use to pull a vacuum. Farm equipment always leaks over the winter. We just convert to 134. I don't think I have a major leak, the defroster worked all winter and I know the compressor was running. I just tried to use the ac tonight and it would'nt work.
