Go to your Mazda dealer and ask for part number FB01-61-150A (air duct). Or go to a wrecker and look for an FC that came without FC.

i just pulled out the heat exchanger and put the empty box back...

That's what most people do and it works fine, but the duct will gain you a little fan performance over the empty box.

An even cheaper and easier idea is to buy flexible air duct from Home Depot, like the stuff you would put on your dryer.
