About to buy an RX7, I have a few questions.

Currently I drive a 1998 Honda Civic LX 5-speed. I recently turbocharged it and am satisfied with it. It's my daily driver and I love it to death. However, I am looking for a project car, I am hungry another car.... I was looking into a 92-95 civic hatch, CRX, 240sx, RX7, Supra, and AE86. My parents are supplying me with 500$ to buy a project car. I found a 1986 RX-7 in the newspaper for 400$. I called the guy and he said the exterior and interior is in pretty good condition. The motor is locked up or something though. He was planning to do a V8 swap but just didnt have the time.

I was thinking about using this car as a autox/driftcar project. Is there any disadvantage of the year that I am looking at? Are there any expected costs I should be aware of? How much would it cost for a motor? I do all work on my cars myself... so labor isnt a matter. I am not sure if I am going to gut it or not, but I'll see once I get the car. I was thinking about putting a 3rd gen TT motor in this car... but I realized I know nothing about these cars really. I would do a V8 swap but ...I hate domestic stuff and it would sort of **** up my autox..I'd be spinning out all over the place. Plus, rotary power sounds cooler.

I will take some pictures of the car tomorrow and post them. Thanks for the help in advance.

TII conversion question

I read the FAQ... a moderator locked my thread before I could add to it and tell him I couldnt find what I wanted to know.

I am going to look at this 1986 rx7 tomorrow...I saw it in the newspaper for 400$. I called the guy and he says the motor is shot. He was planning on doing a V8 conversion but didnt have the time. Anyways, I saw that the 1986 model line did not include a turbo model and that the TII series began in 1987. Does this mean I will not be able to do a 13BT conversion as the FAQ provides information for? Or am I still good to go?

Your other thread is not locked, nor was it ever locked.

but I am going to merge the two.

When a thread is locked it will have a pic of a lock on it, if you see a thread with a black dot it means that you have posted in that thread.

yeah you can still do it. I'd still rather buy a TII, I paid a grand for an 88 TII a couple years ago and drove it home.

Yeah, I read that stuff... I don't think it specified that it was possible to do the turbo conversion to the 86. The conversions mentioned, I believe, were only for 87-91 cars.

Felix, it isn't that easy to find one....well, for me. It's hard enough to find a RX7 in or near AL. And I have a budget of like 500-1000$. I am still coming into the rotary world, I'm just a baby. I know stuff about cars (mostly hondas/acuras), I just don't know everything there is to know about RX7s.

The 86 is the same as the 87 other than very minor electrical things.

Your possible 86 is a N/A, so therefore the FAQ covered it.
