New rx7 owner with some questions!

I jsut bought my first RX7 and ive got a few questions about the car.

What is the best way to start them? so it firess up the quickest I mean. Dhould you pump the ags then crank, or should I hold down the pedal a little and then crank, or waht? Thanks.

Aswell, im installing a new cone air filter, so there is now no place to connect the hose that goes to the air pump, waht should I do with that hose?

This car was owned by a middle aged woman so I doubt she had too many performance oriented thoughts. There are 125,000 km's on the car rgith now, are there any maintenance things I need to do? are the any quick modifications to the car that should be done to increase performance (ie, with a neon if you remove the weather stripping it offers a performance gain)

I will be replacing the exhaust eventually, and ive been talked into buying a racing beat system. I was just wondering where the best place to buy it would be. I live in British Columbia, so shipping is a concern.

Ive read about the carbon build up problems... how often should I redine the car? just a couple times everytime I take it out?

Whats the best type of oil to use? This summer it should be up around 30 or 35 degrees celcius. Ive been topping off with 10W-40 so far, should I not be?

Any general owners tips would be well appreciated..

I had lots more questions but the proxy errors have amde me forget. Ill post them in as I remember :P

ps sorry about the thread title it wont let me edit it... maybe its jsut in my cache I donno how its showing up for you folks

http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/newowner.htm will answer most of your questions.

Aswell, im installing a new cone air filter, so there is now no place to connect the hose that goes to the air pump, waht should I do with that hose?
Disconnect the hose at the pump and install a small filter directly on the pump. Remember to make an airbox around your cone filter, or you will be losing power as you suck hot air from the engine bay.

car that should be done to increase performance (ie, with a neon if you remove the weather stripping it offers a performance gain)
I'm sorry.....but what?!

I will be replacing the exhaust eventually, and ive been talked into buying a racing beat system. I was just wondering where the best place to buy it would be. I live in British Columbia, so shipping is a concern.
In my experience, either buy from RB, or from Mazdatrix.

Ive read about the carbon build up problems... how often should I redine the car? just a couple times everytime I take it out?
Don't worry about it.

just turn it on like any other car.......IF IT FLOODS (won't turn over) then you have to pull the EGI fuse and crank for 5-10 seconds.

buy a breather filter for the air pump: like this one: (look directly behind the HKS intake)

I was gonna say SEARCH but the forum is trippin'.......good luck and keep posting in here with whatever questions you have....even if you think they are retarded noob questions (BECAUSE THE SEARCH FEATURE does not work)

As with almost all fuel injected cars, don't touch the gas pedal while cranking to start. You may want to familiarize yourself (if you haven't already) with exhaust system prices for RX7s. They are not inexpensive, especially for RB products. Many of us use 20-50 Castrol GT oil, perhaps switching 10-40 in the winter, if you have cold winters. If your trans grinds going into 2nd gear, try refilling the trans with Redline MT-90 synthetic. Not cheap at $8-$9/qt, but it does help that 2nd gear problem. Look into the FAQ section of this site for the kind of general info you're looking for regarding these cars.

First and formost, please acuratly describe your thread in the subject. Not many people will click on "#"

The best advise you can follow is what Aaron outlined and READ. read his site, read the FAQ here, read threads. You will find that RX-7's performance do not change with the removal of weather stripping - or really most parts. As an example you can rip out the intake box, but must replace it with a CAI or your gain nothing. In fact you actually loose a bit with a straight cone.

There are many mods to perform, most cost a few bucks. So, my advise is read and plan that first full legit tune-up.

I jsut read it somewhere.. its a qucik 1-2 hp increase.

Anyways I jsut made a trip down to lordco and put in an order for teh air pump filter, should be in this afrernoon .

About the oil... is it ok to be using this 10W-40? will it hurt the enigne at all? Should I use the rest of the jug before going out and buying some 10W30 or 20W-50? thanks,

And does anyone have a guide regarding how to build an airbox for the new intake?

Is it good to leave that stock duct in? so it blow a little bit of air onto the intake?

and Madrx7racer, I see that you have the big duct around the white engine cooling fan (not sure of the right term) removed. Should I do that too? does it help performance/cooling at all?

one more thing... what exactly does the air pump DO?

No do not remove your cooling fan shroud, it will just cause you to start to over heat and the fan won't be able to move air through the raditor.

The air pump, pumps and into the cats. And on a S5 (89-91) it is used to activate the 5&6th port and vdi.

NO! do not remove it if you have the stock fan. The pic I posted was the day she turned over for the first time after the swap.......GTUs Turbo. Without the shroud the car will overheat.

emmissions...... air pump pumps oxygen to dilute the exhaust pollution from the engine. As was said above the cat's backpreassure opens up the 5th and 6th ports......check out FAQ at the top of the secong Gen forum for more info on it.
