91 dieing on me.

I took my Mazda to a dealership to have them fix a few problems. My engine is hard to crank, as if it were flooded. I know flooding for an Rx-7 is an easy to happen, but it happens almost everytime I have to crank it. And I know this is not what I'm supposed to do, but I pump the gas pedal and it starts up.

Another problem with it, is that whenever I turn on my AC my idel drops from 1k to nearly 0. When I'm cruising and I turn on the AC I can feel my car lose power.

With these two problems I took my car to a Mazda dealer and the next day I got a phone call saying that my engine needed to be replaced. After I get the car started, it runs great and with only 96k miles on it I find it hard to believe that it needs to have a new engine. My first 88 Rx-7 got up to 180k miles.

So here is my dilema, I just got a new clutch installed so I'de rather not scrap the car. I was told by the dealership that installing one of their FC engines from Mazda would cost me $4700 total (Tax labor included). I also looked online for engines and found Mazdarx7engines.com. I was debating buying the FD twin turbo but the mechanic told that making my non-turbo a turbo is too much of a hassle.

Does it sound like my engine needs to be replaced from it's problems?
How much does it cost to make my car compatible for a turbo?
Should I just stick with the factory made FC engine from Mazda or buy the FD engine from the site?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks all.

I think you pumping the gas makes it start because s5 models have built in fuel cut when the gas pedal is floor'd so you get enough of the fuel out to get a decent compression. But flooding could be due to leaky fuel injectors or low compression. If it have a steady idle (without ac on) and has good power then it might just be your injectors leaking. And the idle problem could be due to your bac valve not working properly. Search for idle problems etc.

wow-that sucks. ive been through the same thing, i had to replace the motor on my '89 immidatly after i bought it. i went with a mazda factory reman-but i wouldnt have the dealer do it-shop around for the best deal at a COMPETENT ROTARY shop. im speaking from experience here-i had my motor put in by a non rotary shop, and i've been to hell and back fixing everything they did wrong. i ended up taking her to mazdatrix(and now i work there)its really important to have it done right.
as far as having a 13B-REW put in, there are two sides to that coin. FD's tend to blow up/break down alot more than an FC, from what ive seen/heared at mazdatrix. of course, twin turbo is very cool
if you want to build the car up for more power, you might want to look into getting a ported motor(or having yours rebuilt and ported while its appart)also, if you have an NA motor, you can get a T2 if your looking for boost.
theres tons of options-shop around for a motor and do some comparrison of motors/shops before you decide. let the shop know what your goals for the car are.
if your in the so cal area, call or stop by mazdatrix-we'd be happy to help
hope i was able to help!!
