Talking 89 turboII should i get it?!?!

Let me tell you a little about myself first....
My name is josh... I've been selling aftermarket parts for a long time and for the LONGEST TIME ive been into hondas.... Now for quite a while ive been working with DOHC vtec, and some SOHC cars... Ive installed a couple of turbo kits on hondas and so fourth, ive rebuilt 3 honda motors so far.... I do all this work for my friends.... And now its time for me to get a car.... After doing lots of Research I stumbled upon a 89 turboII Rx7... nice condtion.
Now about what i gotta decide is this....
I got about 6k to spend on a car, I checked out this 7 down the street from me the guy wants 1500 for it , it has a Exhuast dunno what kinda, and has a HKS ( he said ) wastegate and said he ran 10psi on it.... i look in the engine bay checked around for spots of oil or anything didnt see anything to wrong... just towards the center of the motor in the front right behind the radiator fan i saw a big oil/greasey deposits.... kinda like ball bearing grease. And the where the stock blow off valve connects to intake charge is broken ( pressurized part ) no biggie i thought. Then the guy told me it had 157k miles ( needs a rebuild im sure of it ) and at the time the car wasnt starting... now im turing 16 pretty soon ( now your saying WTF this guy is 16 and selling aftermarket car parts whats this world coming too ) i just want to know if this would be a good investment and if the motor is blown ill prolly end up rebuilding learn something new.....
but on the other hand there is a 93 mr2 NA brand new motor t tops down the street from me guy wants 4500ish

i hope you guys can help me out also check out the 4sale fourm i got some stuff for you 2nd gen owners!!!!

Yes, the engine will definatly need a rebuild. Also, the rotary is a LOT different than SOHC or DOHC engines. They are VERY shall we say, quirky! Read up the mechanics of the engine, look around the post. If the engine won't turn over, probally bad compression. Do a search on "ATF" or "ATF Trick". This will explain an easy way to get the compression back, granted the apex seals are ok. In short, learn about these bad boys first. Go to www.fc3s.org, under "How To" and then under "MAnuals", look at the 1988 Factory Service Manual. You will learn a LOT from there! Good luck, and uh, get the 7, MR2's suck!!

Go with the rx7 youll thank yourself later. It will most likely need a rebuild i am also 16 and i do lots of work on cars for people. Im looking for a good rx7 turbo and the 89 is a highly sought after year so youlll regrett getting it later if you dont. Plus this car will smoke an mr2 anyday. well once you get it running at least.

I suggest before you considering buying it do a compression... check .. you might have a steal on your hands... the car could just be flooded in which case.. i would buy the 7 for sure..... And after you do the compression check if it gets lousy numbers, you could use that as a negotiating technique for lowering the price...

Buy the car for $1500...it will most likely need an engine soon. Drop a rebuilt engine in there and spend another $1000 on getting the car tightened up. 89-91 Turbo IIs are RARE, when you see one you buy it or regret it for a while.

This is what you should do....

Buy car- $1500
New Engine- $2500 (depends on MANY factors)
Exhaust -$500
Intake $150
Gauges (The stock ones suck)- $300
Downpipe & FCD - $300

Now you'll have a VERY fast bona-fide sports car. BTW, how is the interior of the car? If the seats are splitting, you should get those fixed too.

I've had an MR2 Turbo and NA for a few years before getting an FC..
Interior wise, the MR2 looks better hands down IMO. But I've found that parts for the MR2 aftermarket and OEM are very expensive to replace. If you are gonna work on the car yourself, the mid-engine layout makes it kinda a hassle to work on. I hated the tranny on it, but I think the tranny is kinda weak in the RX7's too(I like the Integra Type-R's tranny feel)... but the MR2 has capability of going FAST (the turbo model) I've also owned an N/A model.. i absolutely hated the performance.. it weighs like 2800+ pounds with 135HP so if you want to go fast, don't bother with the NA. The NA engine uses a 5SFE block which is the same engine used in the camry. However, the 3SGTE (MR2 Turbo engine) is built very well and is reliable IMHO. Handling wise, The MR2 is unpredictable at times which at times can be tail happy (especially the 1991 and 1992 model), but the setup also gives good weight distribution for the track. (At the same time, the small engine in RX7's also gives a good weight balance)
After I got the RX7.. my views on rotary engines changed.

whatever you decide it's ur call!
Good Luck!
