89 GTU Oil Pump concerns

im in the process of buying an 89 GTU with only 56k on the motor, one owner, and im dieing to get this car. But theres one problem, i remember him saying the oil pump went out and he had to replace it (fairly recently, within a year at most), and i was wondering, if the compression tests turn out ok should i still consider buying the car or is it too much of a risk?

It all depends on the price the seller is asking, the condition of the car, if they are readily available in your area, and local pricing. If it's fairly cheap aand the body is in good conition then I'd say go for it. BTW which oil pump are you talking about? The regular engine oil pump, or the MOP?

hmmm..i have no idea which oil pump, he didnt specify but its something im seriosuly going to look into before i start the stuff on buying it.

and yeah, as a matter of fact it is grey, well, "phantom grey" as he put it...but it a new paint job, the origional color was red...and sadly they didnt paint the engine bay, so its an awsome shade of grey with a red engine bay great quality paintjob tho

why? you see it in autotrader since you live in TX?

The regular engine's oil pump never goes out on a rotary...never. There is an auxiliary pump on the outside of the block, called an oil metering pump (OMP or MOP for short) that supplies a drop of oil ever few seconds to the apex seals for longer life...on the 89-91 cars when this goes out you get a computer code and the car goes into limp mode, to let you know. During this time the internal gears and bearings are still getting lubed properly from the mechanical oil pump, only the apex seals are running dry (this is okay for the short term). So long as it was replaced and no longer has the check engine light or code, then it's fine. This is a common failure for 89-91 cars.
