89-92 fuel injection swap

i just bought a 1990 gxl with a blown motor. i read that the injection system was better than my 88 gxl has. can i swap the intake and the throttle body, or any other parts if they will improve the performance on my 88. also can i change the tranny and clutch into my 88.

Swapping the lower and upper intake will result in a 10-15Hp gain due to the VDI and better runners. Keep your injectors and throttle body so you don't have to switch your ECU and wiring harnesses...

There is an excellant web page about this. You can find it by searching google for "rx-7 intake swap" or "rx-7 86-88 89 intake swap".

Without the S5 ECU, there's nothing to operate the VDI. You would need an air pump (stock or electric), a solenoid and some way of switching the solenoid. The "electronic aux ports" method on www.fc3s.org would work.

I have also an 88' GXL. i WILL ALSO BE PERFORMING THIS SWAP WHEN IT WARMS UP ABIT. HAVE ALL THE NECC. PARTS. THE VDI WILL OPEN UP VIA RPM SWITCH AND THE EGR SOLENOID PLUGGED ACCORDINGLY. I REHEARSED THE MOVEMENTS OVER AND OVER AND WILL BE DOING WITH EASE COME CONVERSION TIME...

Series 5 (S5) cars are 89-91, yours is a Series 4. The VDI (Variable Dynamic effect Intake) a basically a 2-stage intake manifold system that optimises flow at high rpm. It's on NA S5 cars only.

rx-7fc, you know, that setup on your home page page looks mighty close as a replica to another RX-7 owners whom I know quite well. Hmm.....
