88 TII Fuel injector test

I am just starting on a car that I bought a year ago. 88TII with an S5 jspec short block installed. The guy I bought it from never got it running. It would puff and pop, but not start. Still does.

First thing I checked was compression. Mid 90's, cold.

New plugs, wires, etc.

I restabbed the CAS to assure timing.

I verified that the fuel lines were hooked up correctly (common jspec problem).

Fuel pump runs with yellow test connector jumped. Walbro 255.

I have not checked fuel pressures, I don't have a tester, I can get one if necessary.

Fuel injectors do not leak under pressure (they were supposedly cleaned and reworked by local diesel shop.)

Fuel injectors make nice cone spray, so the fuel pressure should be ok; but hey! What is this?

Here is my question:

The primary injectors are the ones on the lower, shorter fuel rail, correct?

Those are the injectors that should be firing when the car attempts to crank and start, correct?

The on this car, the upper fuel injectors are firing when the car cranks to start. Isn't this backwards?

Have I found the reason this car won't start?

Thanks for the help.

Seems that way. The primary rail is the short one attached to the intermediate housing.

Good find. Should solve the problem.

Two ways to correct this. Either put the injectors plugs on the right injectors, or swap the wires in the small plug on the ECU.

By the way, at one time I delibertly swapped the wires at the ECU plug to see how using the secondary injectors to start the engine would work. Worked crummy. Car started and idled real bad and I didn't have the nerve to leave the driveway.

Thanks for the confirmation, Hailers.

The previous owner replaced the engine wiring harness. That is why he made the mistake.

BTW, it occurs to me that now I am sure the injectors are on the wrong rail, how do I know which is for the front rotor and which is for the rear rotor?

Does F/R make a difference on the secondary injectors?

Thanks

Ok, when the harness was extended, he made no attempt at color code. I could describe it with a couple of paragraphs, but just be sure that it is pretty much a CF.

I switched the primary and secondary, front to front, rear to rear. I have a 50/50 chance of the orientation being correct on the primaries. I might guess better than 50/50 if I assume he made one mistake.

If I am backward on the primaries I can switch the pins at the ecu.

Question: Is it pretty certain that it won't start if they are reversed, front to back? I guess that I should just break down and check it out rather than get in hurry.

At this point, I am not confident that the injector wires are even paired correctly, so to the ecu to pin it out to the injectors.

Update!

Injectors plugs are now on the correct injectors. I am putting this thing back
together, but there are lots of little details that were apart when I got this car. I may have more questions. I will eliminate the obvious and then ask the questions in another thread.

I am satisfied that the Fuel System is back together correctly.

Thanks for the help!
