CA 88 rx7 engine swap

hey there guys, im a new old member i suppose you could say. I just bought an 88 rx7, N/a with 5 speed. drove it home, runs great but has no smog equipment at all i.e. egr valves, etc. I dont care about smog, im swapping the motor, clutch, and trans into another car. What id like to get some info about is what i can do to the motor now that the smog is gone, i think it is causing some minor issues. Car wont idle until it has been running at a decent rmp (say about 2 grand) for about a minute/ minute and a half. after that it will idle fine at about 600rpm. Is this typical of a 13b? Some side notes for you: No exhaust, only a down pipe and resonator, it was newly rebuilt, then parked for a few months before i purchased it. it has a aftermarket intake with the airflow meter about 2.5 feet from the intake plenum. When you come down from a high rpm without feathering the gas as it drops it tends to stall. could this be because of the lack of egr valves? anything to get me started would be great. car does not lack power at all, the idle problem is the only problem i have. Thanks guys,

-Ian

Sounds like the fast idle system has been removed. Not really a problem - more of an inconvenience. I would try advancing the timing slightly until the idle comes up to about 700-750 or so. That won't really help the start-up idle but the decel cut-off should improve a little. you might notice a slight increase in torque.

right on. where can i find the fast idle system? any obvious things that can tell me one way or another? i havent had too much time under the hood. its hotter than hell out here right now. Also as far as swapping the motor to my other car, what is avaliable to help me out? any stand alone ECUs i can buy after market so i dont have to fish through the factory wiring harness? any rotary places in So Cal that anyone can recommend?

Most people delete all of the extra items on the intake when the emissions are deleted. The fast idle system with the thermowax/dashpot is what controls the fast idle cam. Most people get rid of the extra complication of having coolant flow through the throttle body and BAC valve.

This is not usually an issue with a strong engine. Although the idle might need to be above 600 - usually around 700-750 will keep things running ok. A timing advance of around 5-7 degrees will do this with a few torque numbers of increase.

So whats bothering you? what exactly are you trying to accomplish? Alot of the extra items & added complexity aren't totally necessary for the vehicle to run properly.

How is it that in smog-city CA you can not have emissions controls? Are you running a track only car?

I think a little more information might be needed to clarify the issue. You might consider yourself lucky to have a functioning vehicle.

Does having to give a little throttle when cold bother you? Bump up the timing a little bit.....

well, to answer you questions and give you some insight. ive only driven the vehicle home and around the block a few times. Im not very familiar with the rotary engine so the systems which might be "extra" im not aware are extra. If the fast idle is no big deal, ill have no problem then, ill just do the few things you are mentioning. The engine and trans are going into a 1963 TVR grantura MKII. No emissions needed then. Id like to make a decent amount of power with a very responsive power band, but i dont need a whole lot, the car only weighs in at about 1200 pounds with oil and coolant - and thats with cast iron 1800cc 4 cylinder, so im not worried about being "underpowered" i would just like about 200 something horses on tap with little lag. As it runs now, im pleased, its a very strong motor, but im sure that the stalling problem would bug me pretty bad, but if you what you suggested remedies the problem, no sweat.

The TVR has about an 83 inch wheelbase, will weigh a bit over 1000lbs, and is one of 390 cars.
