88 n/a vert tranny to 86GXL n/a Q's

ok, heres the story. blew up my 86GXL tranny. went to pick'n'pull found a 88 vert, with 80k miles on it, clean as all could be. pulled the tranny, noticed a slight difference on it. On my stock 86 tranny, the whole thing is round. on the vert tranny its square where the drain plug is. Ive searched through about 3 pages on here, and all posts say that NA to NA is the same, but, my new 88vert tranny will not fit my NA 86gxl. pulled the clutch disk off, and tried to line up the spline...vert tranny has larger spline...

so heres my question. Am i the first person to have had this problem? is there a difference in Vert trannys? Can i pull the clutch disk off the Vert, and will it fit my flywheel? or do i need to pull the flywheel too? (i hope not, cause god damn it looks hard as **** to pull off..)

What would you guys recomend? id like to keep the vert tranny as it looks to be in good condition, and all shifts feel really good. But, if its just gunna be more work than its worth to make it fit on my 86, then i will take it back, and grab a coupe tranny. and perhaps have more luck with that.

Thanx for your replys!

hmm.. square where the drain plug is?

That sounds like a TII tranny.. But I wonder why there was one in the vert..

Could be wrong tho. Post some pics of the trans and we'll tell you.

88 vert used a M50 tranny while S4 coupes used M85 trannys.

But they are completely interchangeable, and use the same splines and mounts.

Does the tranny you have, have a access plate across the bottom, and two fill holes??? If so you have a turbo tranny not a vert tranny

Its square where the drain plug is with a bunch of 10mm bolts(i suppose an accesse plate). there are 2 fills plugs, one is a little higher and farther back than the other.

my dig camera is broken, otherwise i would post some pics.

So, it sounds as though i have a turbo tranny... thats wierd, the engine in the vert isnt turbo.

What would i need to do to make this tranny work? flywheel and clutch disk/pressure plate? or just disk, and pressure plate. The flywheel on mine looks damn near impossible to take off (a single 40mm bolt..maybe bigger)

What about drive shafts? (i havnt compared them side-by-side) they looks as though they are the same.

Also, what are the differences between the t2 tranny, and NA gearing?

If there are two fill holes and two drain holes then I am positive that is a TII tranny. I just went to the garage and looked at my 88 n/a convertible transmission and it only has one fill plug and one drain plug. Hope this helps

yeah my 'vert' tranny has a single drain, and 2 fill.

I just need to know what all i have to get in order to make it work with my NA

What's different about the M50? I only know of the S4 .711 5th, S4 .697 5th, and S5 ribbed .697 5th.

From what I have been told 5th gear ratio and gear durability (gears peaned- like a 2nd gen miata), and syncros like a S5 non turbo.

But I can not confirm that peaned gear thing, so take that at what its worth.

so does anybody know if i what is required to make the t2 work on a NA car? do i need the t2 flywheel? or just the pressure plate and clutch disk? (trying figure it out before i go back to pick'n'pull to get them.

if its just the pressure plate and clutch disk i can just take mine to pick'n'pull tell them im going to look at somethen, and then trade them with the one on the car.

thanx for all the info so far though!

To use a R type (turbo tranny) in a non turbo you will need a Turbo flywheel, Entire Turbo Clutch (plate, disk, throwout bearing), Turbo clutch slave, Turbo starter, Custom drive shaft (or a Turbo driveshaft and Turbo differential and Turbo halfshafts), and Turbo tranny mount.

It sure sounds like a turbo trans.

The NA trans uses a 7/8", 23 spline input shaft.
The turbo trans uses a 1", 23 spline input shaft (same as a Ford Pinto :P ).
