Unhappy 88 N/A Auto -> 5spd Turbo...driveshaft question

The plot thickens...I have an 88 N/A Automatic, I am swapping a Turbo II Motor and Transmission. Which driveshaft do I need? And do I NEED to use a TII rear diff?

nope... i don't believe you need one. since the spindles(sp) of the auto shaft fit the TII tranny and the end of the driveshaft fit the auto rear, then it should fit.

AHHH, loooong day of work... am i right?

If you use a TII rear diff you will need TII axles also. You might need to drill new bolt holes or buy a custom flange.

The auto driveshaft is 2" short. It'll work but I don't suggest using it or doing any 'hard' launches with it, since it will break. Ideally you want to swap the rear diff/halfshafts with that from a tII and use a tII driveshaft.

you can get it lengthened and get some new u-joints for about 100$ which is cheaper then anything else I can think of.

You'll NEED a custom driveshaft because the na and turbo ends of the driveshaft are very different. Mazdatrix will make you one, but it's about two fifty.

adding onto what SonicRat said-

NA Automatic driveshaft will connect to the larger s5 turbo tranny spline, but retains the NA diff connector. (S4 NA tranny has a smaller spline) It will work for daily driving as long as you dont push the car hard.

TII diff and axles will complete the project! It is more economical as TII diff has limited slip, while very few NA diffs have LSD, and only have limited options on upgrading (ie: Miata Torsen.)

NA Auto driveshaft is different from TII driveshaft
