88 N/A 5 speed....whining in 5th gear under load

my RX has been giving a high pitched whine in 5th gear for some time....over that time it has gotten worse. It is only in 5th gear, and only under load (not coasting or engine braking). Any ideas on what the problem is?

Ditto

If It's the original tranny(not rebuilt), that usually means its about to blow.
Try changing the fluid ASAP to get a little more life out of it, otherwise I'd start shopping for a new low miles tranny, or a rebuilt one.
If it blows which you drive it, You wont be able to put it in 5th or reverse first, then 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, will go out. You ALWAYS have fourth gear, unless there is a catasrophe, so if it starts grinding like crazy, throw it into fourth and pull over, or go as far as you can.

My rebuilt tranny whines like a bitch, but it's alright, because I've talked to other people, and their rebuilds do the same. I dunno why either, I had a reputable rotary shop rebuild mine.

I changed the fluid about 10,000 miles ago. About how much can I expect to pay for a rebuilt one...or to ahve this one rebuilt?

you need a tranny my friend...your best luck will be finding a used one - a rebuild will run you some pretty major bucks....just make sure wherever you get a tranny from - you get mileage verification...be it bought from someone on the forum or from an importer

you should be able to find a used one for a few hundred dollars...depending Ive seen some deals and some bananna peels out there - just beware

it is the stock transmission. What's making the sound? Bearings going out?

Yep, It's pretty much just worn out.
My Rebuild was about $900, but Mine blew up, so I needed new donor gears etc.

You can find a good used tranny anywhere from free to $300, it just depends on the deal you get on it.

Free or cheap things are always best.

How many miles are on it?
