88 GXL Worth it?

I was lookin around and found a 1988 GXL. The guy wants 1700 or BO. Car looks fine, runs fine, everything looks great. Car also has 129k miles. Is it worth it? I've heard 2nd Gen RX-7s only last to about 150k miles. Is that true? Just looking to see if I should throw all that money on this car. I also want to get some back seats for it if I end up getting it, anyone have some cheap ones for sale? Thanks for any feedback!

150k? You need to hang around some smarter kids. RX-7's can last forever if maintained.

First off, thats not a GXL. A GXL has 5 lug rims, that looks like an SE that some fucktard but GXL stickers on. I'de try to knock em down so they can take care of that front end.

I think its worth it for aroud $1500 or less (to replace that bumper and take care of those fenders). Do a compression check first however.

I wouldn't pay that much for it. It also looks pretty beat up. The engine bay isn't anywhere near clean. When selling a car (or decently taking care of it), it shouldn't be that dirty. That just screams neglect to me.

The front bumper is easy to fix (replace it) compared to other body damage.

Also note the base model rear speaker grills and fixed headrest seats.

-The bumper only needs a repaint right? Doesnt need a whole new bumper. By the way this would be my first car. Would an RX-7 be too hard for me to maintain myself? I've been into cars for a while now but Im just starting to get into RX-7s.

I'd run the VIN through Carfax if I were you.

Nothing on that seems like a GXL except the stickers.

When I bought my RX-7 the only thing I knew how to do on a car was check the oil level (basically). In the 3 years since then, I've done every single piece of work on my car except rebuild the engine.

If you have the time and will, you can maintain it.

yeah, def not a GXL. GXL's have auto adjusting suspension as well as the 5 lug wheels mentioned above and cruise control which is missing in the engine bay pics....I'd be real carefull about buying that car...most ppl don't just swap body parts for fun, it was probably hit in the front. check for frame damage. Also 1800.00 is too much for a car in that condition. I'd pay 1200.00 MAX. I got my GXL for $930.00 in similar if not a little better condition but my Odometer is higher.

*EDIT AHHHH!!! First Car? Be VERY VERY carefull buying this car and MAYBE you won't have a big headache to deal with. With 125,xxx on the Odo. and not knowing how the last owner kept it...it's condition is EVERYTHING...I'd say the last owner probably didn't care too much givin the filthy engine bay and the plethora of dents. The thing about Rx-7's is they are a love/hate relationship most of us put a lot of time and money into these cars, negected ones require a lot of upkeep and parts aren't exactly cheap. especially since they are almost 20 years old. My advice is to go buy a 4 banger and save the 7 for when you can afford it....and when you have the luxury of owning a second car.

LoL Definitely not a GXL. Base model or SE maybe. Not worth $1700. I paid $1650 for my 188 GTU when i got it and it was cleaner than that!! Keep looking, you can find a better FC for just as much. And the whole 150k is horse ****. i drift my GTU and it has 125k running strong. My Black GXL that i have for sale is a 1988 With 255,000 Miles, and it still runs good!! But i would keep looking. that's not a GXL.

So lets see if I can get all this in one post..

Non GXL (wheels/headrest/speaker grills/Cruise Control) - Deduct Price
Neglected (Dirty Engine bay/Dents/paint) - Deduct Price
Bumper ( Paint/Dented/Scratches) - Deduct Price
Fenders (Paint/Dented/Scratches) - Deduct Price
No Auto Adjusting Suspension - Deduct Price
Possible Front end colision - Deduct Price

So lets see.. 1700 OBO - 6 wrongfull items. 1000-1200 OBO? =D How much do all these things cost? Bumper/Fender replacement, difference between Base Model and a GXL, price of auto adjusting suspension?

Thanks for all the help everyone!

Well the auto adjusting suspension most likely wouldn't work anymore (if it was there), but it can still be a bargaining point.

I'd say the body damage is your strongest bargaining chip. For bargaining, get a quote from Mazda for a new front bumper. I can almost guarantee it won't be ANYWHERE near cheap. For reality though, I'd just get a used replacement or fix it if you can.

It's an SE model. In other words, the crappiest.

In 88 there were only SE, GTU, GXL, Verts, and TII's.

SE was the "base model".

my gxl rocked
my car had some problems, needed a clutch not too soon after i got it, and some other things, bad paint
chiped/pitted hood and front window. 115k miles the frame rails looked like someone was playing "dukes of hazzard" with it and the auto adjust suspension was shot.
i payed 1250$.... i personally would not go any higher than 1300-1500 on this one.

got a 91 fc few months back and payed 3k for it, newer rebuilt engine, nice paint... the interior is all there, everything looks good. may have payed too much considering some of the things it will need but i wanted it badly so it was worth it to me.

the question being.... is this car "worth it" to you

Cool

I paid 400 bucks for my "blown" 88 gsl. I've put 12K on it so far and run the **** out of it... 120mph Plus. It had just sat too long and I babied the apex back into life. A little Greased Lighting oil conditioner and took it easy on it awhile.

I LOVE this car. If I was to sell it i'd be asking 2K and probably take 1500 but it's too much fun. I'll do things to it I won't do to my 85 GSL-SE.

Don't pay more than $1K and here are the reasons why I think so...

-Its a SE, base model
-that means 4 lug wheels, open diff, and single-piston front caliper, to simply get it up to spec you will have to purchase and install 5 lug hubs, an LSD diff, and 4piston front calipers
-Lord knows what condition the engine is in considering it appears to have been in a crash, obviously from the front bumper and the appearance that the fenders were replaced with GXL fenders

If you can get it for 4-700 it may be worth it pending the condition of other things (interior?) but this car has obviously not had much love in its life and considering it is a 4lug-base-model there are other more promising cars that you could put effort into.

I offered him 1000. He said he will consider it. Meaning if he cant find anyone to buy it for his first price, he might sell it to me. lol
