Thumbs up '87 Turbo II - TMIC to VMIC, FD UIM, E Fan...Recent Mods

Hey guys,

So I have been running the BNR Stg 1 with the stock TMIC for a while getting some basic kinks worked out after the initial rebuild project. It was sufficient for the beginning but I was always planning to upgrade in the future. I had toyed with the idea of a front mounted intercooler but ultimately decided against it for many reasons. I was able to keep the TMIC and limit the boost to 8psi with good results. But since I am turning up the boost this summer I wanted to do something different. Plus I wanted to show case the FD UIM and throttle body I had swapped so I wanted to get rid of the TMIC now.

Here it is with the TMIC:

I had seen some similar intercooler setups on here from fellow members and wanted to try my hand at a VMIC or HMIC whatever these happen to be. I like the short tubing and the look of the setup, the fact that you can't see the intercooler from outside of the car, the fact that it's less common than FMIC. I didn't know what to expect when starting but eventually managed to get the parts, little by little it worked out.

I went with a 11x20x3 cxracing core with 2.5" outlets and 2.5" piping, T-clamps all around. I retained the stock radiator, modified the mounting position and inlet/outlet pipes, new custom coolant lines. Added 3,600CFM e-fan and thermostat.

All I need now is the GReddy throttle body elbow to finish the piping and create some shrouding around the radiator/intercooler sides. Getting some carbon sheet and foam weather stripping, we'll see how it turns out. Still a few things to finish up but you can see the basic idea so far.

Let me know your thoughts, constructive criticism welcome. Ideas, suggestions or whatever, leave a comment. Thanks.

-NJGB

So are you going to need a new hood to allow air flow to the intercooler?

Looks good. a reverse scoop style hood and you should be golden. By the way , what color is that called that you have in the bay.

I plan to try it with the stock TII hood, I have all the temps logged from the TMIC setup to compare this to. The temps will determine whether I get a new hood, I'm fine either way.

Angled silicone couplers (like your 90 degree) do not hold up to higher boost levels. Ask J-rat about that. All the flex under boost can eventually make them split or blow off. The most reliable way is to have your intercooler pipes practically touching each other and sitting flush. Then the straight couplers don't have any stress on them.

nice work on that hmic. You don't have a/c correct? Would that setup even work with the a/c in there?

Yeah the 90 is the weak point but I couldn't avoid it right now, I'd like to get it all welded but don't have the capability to weld aluminum at this point. I'm only aiming for 15 psi max so we'll see how it holds up. Might rip it two, if so I'll be forced to upgrade.

I don't have AC, I actually removed that myself, the car didn't come with power steering. It would be incredible if you could keep the ac, I obviously had to delete some stuff to gain clearance.

Very nice work. What were your intercooler temps like with the top mount?

Thanks guys.

I have the previous setup logs on my other pc, I'll get some specifics later tonight. I've still got to finish the new TID and wire my e-fan, tps and AIT sensors. Fill it back up with coolant and we should be good to go.

why would ac not fit? does the condensor not fit in the space between the radiator and the oil cooler?

Stock turbos wont hold more than 13psi passed 6k rpms. And after 13psi your AIT will skyrocket....

Thanks man.

I was thinking more along the lines of having to remove the clutch fan and pulleys that drive the compressor. I had to get the radiator pretty far back to allow the intercooler to sit in the right position. You might be able to make it work, though it's been years since I had AC in the TII so it's hard to remember how it's laid out. I don't think the condenser would be a problem, the intercooler doesn't go that far forward.

Right, but I am not using a stock turbo, I have a BNR Hybrid T04B V-trim compressor, it should be able to hold 15psi without overheating. Always thinking about a 60-1 upgrade too...

I followed your other build thread and was wondering what was going on with the car. I like
the new IC setup. I will be curious to see how a V-mount works under a stock tII hood. I just
fitted a front mount on my rebuild, but wish I could have know about what you have going on
to consider this route. Really only would want to do it if the temps are okay with stock hood.

hey rx-7tII88, hows it going man?

It's been a while since the last round of mods but I think this is going to turn out well. I'm wondering how big of a difference some alcohol or H2O injection would make, like maybe instead of a different scoop I could add some Cooling Mist system to combat high temps.

I would like to keep the visual apsect of the car pretty mild, clean and tasteful but mild looking. That's a big reason I wanted to avoid the FMIC, I just don't like to look of it in the bumper. I would fit a vented hood if I had to but I would rather have the stock TII hood. So we'll have to see how the temps are with the stock hood and v-mount, then either alcohol injection or vented hood.

Anyone know of a vented hood that doesn't look like a Fast and Furious Honda? preferably FG not carbon fiber.

next couple of weeks. Its been to long, and I keep putting off the work. Im getting pretty
excited about it though.

Im sure Ill be following this thread. Your car has been up and coming for a while now. I guess
the patience is paying off. Looks real great.

The PanSpeed type II is the nicest by far... its also the most expensive and the hardest to get. I was going to have a fiberglass guy make me one from an NA hood.

Hey NJ my friend! It's been a while since I followed your progress. Haven't been on the site as regularly as I used to. I must say the VMIC install looks grand! I figured you would eventually do something like this to take advantage of your BNR upgrade. You must post a video once you get your fuel management dialed in. Til then I will subscribe. Keep up the good work!

Scrip old pal. Thanks, it's still coming together but should be ready in a week or two. I'm basically waiting for my GReddy compression tube and some minor things. I'll keep this thread up to date.

Take it easy man.

Looks good man!

AS far as the 90 deg couplers go.. Yeah they are pretty much a bitch but if you get a GOOD QUALITY one and dont skimp on the fasteners you will be okay for 15 PSI.

Thanks Rat!

The 90' coupler was $21 itself, 4 ply reinforced silicone so hopefully it holds up.

Thanks for answering my questions about the thermowax stuff. But, I want to know where you got that reduction 90 degree coupler. I need one for the stock turbo to my IC piping that is 2.5". The stock turbo is 1.5" isnt it?

EDIT:
If that is indeed what that is there. It looks like it though.
