87 TII smokes on startup

I have an 87 TII that runs great. It doesnt smoke at any RPM after initial startup. It also does 'nt smoke after sitting for 5 or 6 hours. Compression is fine. Seems to burn the proper amount of oil.
However after sitting all night or longer it smokes profusely for about 25-30 seconds & that's it.
I checked the archives & could'nt find this exact scenario.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Stew

If its cold outside, like most cars, you'll be able to see the smoke; just like you can see your breath. Also, if its white smoke and it smells like gas, your engine might be flooding a little.

Rotarys act strange when its cold. It shouldn't concearn you too much though, but then again, im still a novice.

What color is the smoke?
It shouldn't smoke like that.

The 2nd gen's have an emissions related device, known as a "thermopellet", located at the front of the e-shaft behind the large center bolt. The purpose of the thermopellet is to bypass the rotor oil spray jets during warmup, which promotes a shorter warmup period. Sometimes these thermopellet devices go bad and will continuously cause the oil to be bypassed, which lwill eventually lead to premature engine failure. The symptoms that you describe may indicate that your thermopellet valve has gone bad. There's a writeup about this somewhere on the MazdaTrix website. Also, I beleive that Mazda putout a TSB warning about the thermopellet problems on high mileage vehicles. This same problem happened to my 90 GXL, which led to an engine failure about a year ago at 211k miles. When I replaced the engine, I put in a thermopellet eliminator. There may be other possible causes of you smoking problem, but I'd suggest checking the thermopellet during your troubleshooting process.

Thanks for your replies. The smoke is blue, definitely oil. It's not outside temp related as it happened in the summer as well.
I'll reseach that thermopellet; thanks again.

I say it's the nature of the beast, oil smoke on start up. Once converters warm up you'll see no smoke. As long as not excessive (Don't know your meaning of profusely)don't worry about it. My '89TII did it for years, but never added any oil between the 3,000 mile changes.
You can check the threads in 3rd gen section also, as there are quite a few writeups on the subject. There are many opinions as to the reason, but as I said earlier...If not excessive, just drive it.
