'87 TII - Rear Differential Troubles...Please Help Me. VIDEO TOO.

Hey guys,

I think there's something wrong with my rear end on my TII, it whines loudly when I hit the gas. The diff was supposedly rebuilt right before I bought the car, it wasn't whining when I test drove it but it began whining on the 200 mile drive home. The car has been worked on for almost two years and I finally am ready to fix this whining.

My question is could the whining be due to a bad ring and pinion or is it most likely the LSD itself? I am not that familiar with the differential so I would greatly appreciate any input here. I'm already looking for a replacement rear end but I would be happy to fix it how ever would be the quickest, easiest and most affordable. So is it possible to fix this with out replacing the whole thing?

Here's the video - Test Drive w/ Diff Whining

Thanks for any input.

lol haha wow thats just like my car. red and i have the same a/f gauge! sounds like it too lol...

Are you sure that noise isnt coming from the trany?? sounds kinda like an input shaft noise... Does the noise change tone depending on gear? like is it alot less noisy in 4th gear?? does the shifter get real hot??

Also, next time you're coasting, try pushing the clutch in and listening for any changes in noise...

Bad ring and pinion or it's improperly set up.

Check the fluid in your rear end. If it's low it would wine but that sounds like the tranny to be honest. Check the fluid because those gears sound like they're singing to you bro.
Any questions send me a message.

The Noise

Like I said, it started on the drive home, I thought it might be from the trans as it had 146K on it, but I swapped in a nice fresh Jspec Trans, new clutch etc... and it still makes the horrid noise.

Here's the new tranny and the old one-

The trans is great, smooth enough for me alright. The whining is definately from the rear, though it seems like it might be towards the drivers side.

I had the wheel bearings done before, the fluid in the diff is brand new and proper weight. also it doesn;t whine when in neutral - only under throttle/load.

Bad ring and pinion? Do I have to reset back lash or whatever if i replace the ring and pinion or what?

No, you can just swap out the 3rd member with a different unit.

I just bought the ring and pinion, he's throwing in the bearing and hardware as well. I'll obviously be following the FSM when replacing but I am open to an hints, tips or tricks that you guys may have from experience when working inside the rear differential.
