'87 rx7 shifting problem?

I need some help. my friend is about to buy a '87 RX7, 5 Speed. It is non-turbo and has about 120k miles on it. it seems to be in good shape all around except it needs a new flywheel. the teeth have started to seprated from the main part of the flywheel. i personally dont know very much about 2nd gen RX7s. the thing that i was concered about was they told him that when you were shifing from 1st to 2nd that you couldent sift sright down and you had to go over and find neutral before you could shift into 2nd gear. Also they told him that when you tired to shift stight down out of 1st to 2nd, and dident go over to neutral was, that it made a grinding nose. now i was concered about this because i was looking at this page it said something about the 2nd gear syncro may be worn out and commonly is on the 2nd gen RX7s. i was wondering if this could be a possible thing to worry about or is the car fine and '87 RX7s shift patters are just like that and that is what you have to do to shift into 2nd gear.
