87 RX-7 SE Smog

I live in a tiny little podunk town and the people around here can't even do a tune up on it. Even the import specific shop said that there is no way to prevent it from running rich is to replace the carberator... It's FUEL INJECTED! Their advice as to fixing the smog issues was to turn it into the state for a $1500 tax credit. People I have called won't even work on it.

HELP, What can I do?

Ya, what a bunch of *********. Fix the issue and you should be back in shape in no time. There are tips in the FAQ, just hit ctrl-F and look for "smog".

For example if you really are running rich it would show up as high CO and high HC but low NOx on your smog test. IIRC the solution is either bad air pump or "running rich". But first verify your smog test results, post here, check the table in the FAQ, and hopefully someone more knowledgeable will help you from there.

Well, start with basics. Search here, i have answered a few questions already in the past weeks. Your not the only one having issues.

Tune-up, check airpump, check emissions equipment, ect.... Find someone locally from the forums who can help you work on your car if you don't know much about it.

Ummm... NO! I worked hard to get my car.

Well I took it to the smog shop and it passed all but the Idle speed test and the EGR Valve vacuume test.

Sometimes the idle surges after a cold start, it is below freezing where I live, could the EGR cause all of this? Also how hard and expensive is it to replace?

Thanks to all who posted here.

BTW I live in Grass Valley Ca (95945) if anyone is close to me.

Yea yea! I told the gut who said turn it into the state that I would rather go to the Sacramento Speedway, eat some Honda's for breakfast and then race it till it explodes!

HAHAHA What color is yours? There is a red one (T2 I think), another black T2 in GV on Banner Mt. and a red one in Colfax @ the auto shop off of HWY 174. Mine has the custom hood scoop and park bench spoiler. (I bought it that way)

Today I saw that Black T2 and parked next to it for a photo

Not just you, I have considered taking it off but I don't have anything to replace it with. I bought my rex from a 50-something year old Nam Veteran lol. He must have really like the rice look.

Well back to the EGR Valve issues... I can't afford $300 for a new EGR so what are the chances that I can clean it out or fix the parts already on my car? I have read that when a few people removed it that the valve was 100% blocked by carbon deposits. The smog guy said that he read vacuume going TO the valve but not OUT of the valve.

All I need to do is pass smog is get the idle from 1100RPM's to 750 (It dropped to 800 when I started it to drive away after failing the test) I made the guy look and he said if it keeps that up all I need is the EGR Fixed. I can try to scan the Smog paperwork if anyone wants to see it.

I drive a white s4 n/a with temps. lol. nothing crazy on it. completely stock.

ok yeah ive seen you drive yours around.. im pretty sure i raced you in my old convertible rx7. it was the only clean red one in town for a while. but they are popping up all over.

and im sure that t2 was for sale for 1500.. but i dont know if it a real t2 or just a n.a with a hood.. but oh well...

but yeah anyways.. you can try cleaning out the egr. or at least check to see if its clean.. i dont know a whole lot about 7's.. but if u need help with wheel bearings or something of that nature. then i can do that. lol

once again good luck with that!

OK, so I pulled off and tested the EGR and it's fine, there is also vacuume going in port and when I force current to the valve, it opens and there is vacuume on the other side.

The guy at the smog shop said there was no vacuume coming off of the valve and the it was also supposed to "make the car sound like it's about to stall" when you force the valve open manually.

The ONLY reason I failed smog was High Idle (1100RPMs) and EGR Vacuume.

So... WTF!!! Did the guy test the relief valve right next to the egr instead of the egr valve itself?? This was all Done @ Arch's on E. Main St. BTW.
