87 RX-7 high revs and oil pressure

I have an 87 RX-7 N/A with 187k on it. To the best of my knowledge it has the original tranny and motor in it. It has an oil leak at present which from doing some research i believe is in the oil cooler. Very recently my engine started to rev very high (4000+ rpm) after it had cooled down. Sometimes it's fine, but after I shift gears a couple times, when I put the clutch in the revs jump and stay up at least for a bit. I haven't really driven it all that much since it started to do this because i'm afraid of blowing the engine. Also, the oil pressure goes past 60 lbs when the engine does this. Please any help is appreciated.

the rpm would raise to 4000rpm by itself?

60psi at 3000rpm+ is normal, lower, then you would have problems.

So the oil pressure is just matching the rpms then? Maybe that's so, but why is it revving so high? It's only when the tranny is in neutral. I can be going 20 in 3rd (just pretend) and I'm at 1500rpm, then I put the clutch in and I'm all of a sudden at 4000rpm. A friend thought maybe it was a stuck valve?

check you throttle cable for slack, it should never be tight, there should be some slack to it.
Check the cable also for binding. Then check the thottlebody itself, make sure the butterflys are not sticking when you move the throttle cable.

I had a similiar problem when I had my 88se, the starter would engage all of a sudden when there is an abrupt shock to the car such as going over a bump. It would make my rpm shoot to 3k, which is impossible because the starter will not spin the engine that high. But as soon as I changed the starter, the problem stopped. When it happened, I can hear the starter whining. I smacked it when it happened and it stop.

So i looked around last night, and then I realized that I didn't know what I was looking at. I engaged the throttle manually with the little puller by the throttle body and that was ok. I don't know where the throttle cable is though or how to check the butterflies. What you said about the starter seems about right to me though. I did notice then it seems to jump revs when i hit bumps. So I think replacing the starter is a good place to start the repairs.
