quick qestion, starter relay current

Hey guys,

Got a question.

I am installing an alarm system in the 91 turbo, and therefor i want to cut the red/black wire at the steering colum comming from the ignition switch, going to the starter relay.

Does anybody know the current going true that red/black wire? The integrated cut relay can handle 25amps max and 15amps continious.

I am not able to mesure it at this time.

thank you

I can't say exactly how much current passes through, but it is only to activate the starter solenoid. The starter itself is powered via the battery cables. For what it's worth, my start circuit has been rewired using a 40A relay and a 30A fuse. If you have an ammeter, you can measure draw during cranking.

I was hoping somebody mesured it before and remembered how much is going true

EDITED because of a huge mistake on my part. Later.

Takes 3.16 amps on a cold car of mine. At first I thought it took only 133ma.......but thunk on that for a while and realized I'd put a RS relay in the system and THAT relay was what I was reading when going to Start. So I went to the relay and wired in my Fluke88 to the power wire to the starter solneoid and got 3.16 amps. That's the SOLENOID taking the three point one six NOT the relay. The RS relay is pulling only what I just said, 133ma to pull in.

Red/Black sees the 3.16amps when the starter is turning.

I may have to kick myself off this forum for bad anwers. I just realized I just measured (in my post just above) the path from the starter solenoid .......thru the RS relay contacts........thru a self installed 15a fuse........to the batt positive post.

My red/black is just being used to pull in the RS relay, NOT the starter solenoid. But my 3.16amps figure should be close enough for you. I installed that RS relay to overcome a defective ignitoin switch (click, click, click, start thing).

RS stands for Radion Shack automotive relay.
