MI 87 N/A Muffler Question

I just acquired an 87 today (traded away an 82 carbed 12a) and the only thing it needs is a muffler. Ive been shopping around online and am kinda lost to a point. I know the direct fit mufflers are quite expensive and feel I might as well go aftermarket like Magnaflow or something else. Im curious of some part numbers and information on finding mufflers that arent a difficult custom job and a little closer to direct fit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jeff

remember you need back pressure to open your 5th and 6th ports, i would just wire open the 5th and 6th and jut put a 3in cat back, if its a turbo II dont worry about the ports you dont have them

It is a non-turbo. I apologize I'm still new to rotary's. Should only factory replacements be used?

its up to you, if you wire them open you ont have any issues. then you can use whatever exhaust you want. if you stock then get stock, if you want one that looks stock but gives it mre power check out racingbeat.com or just get a 3in exhaust its up to you. but if you get a bigger exhaust and dont open the 5th and 6th ports you will lose 40hp so just make sure you wire them open

Most cheapie aftermarket mufflers are too loud and/or will get destroyed by the intense heat and pressure of a non-turbo rotary engine. It is better to stick with mufflers that are intended for non-turbo rotary engines. Apexi and GReddy make good universal mufflers that work well with rotary engines, but they are rather expensive.

Rotary Performance sells a decent 50mm catback exhaust system for $395:

I would recommend that you try to keep your ports functional. Rotary engines are short on low-end torque as it is, and wiring them open will just make it worse.

Fixed it for you....

As long as you run a cat-back and not mess with the catalytic converter you will be fine. If you go magnaflow, it will be custom made since they only sell you the mufflers. Check out racingbeat.com or corksport.com and rx7.com for some exhausts...

Remember, single exhaust will be louder than dual. If you replace your cat or the full exhaust system, make sure it has the pickup tube on it for the 5/6th ports to activate with.

I had magnaflows before and they never had an issue burning up. Just make sure they are well built mufflers. Its the packing material they use to insulate the sound which burns up due to the heat or exhaust flames, there are different mufflers who use cheaper materials.....
