87 GXL into the 13's?

my friend is picking up a stock 87 GXL...

he wants to know what kind of 1/4 mile times he could see once he gets it rebuilt and streetported, headers, custom 3" exhaust w/ high flow cat and Borla XR-1 race muffler, intake, ignition, electric fan, removal of A/C and power steering, and 4.30 rear gears.... and maybe some slicks... would 13's be possible?

13's are definately possible with this setup. with a really good driver you may see as good as mid-low 13s, dont count on it tho. there's some guy with a setup similar to this, who is running 13.9 and 12.8 with a 100shot of NOS. Me , i hate the nos ****, but whatever floats your boat.

He might want to put the car on a diet, too. Remove anything unnecessary, like P/S, A/C, sound dampening material, etc...

dude.

Whats up with the agression?

No need for name calling, but I do agree. Start with the TII and save money and time getting into the 13's.

Maybe he wants something that is more reliable? Or gets decent gas mileage? Or maybe a unique challenge, or doesn't want the headache associated with a turbo car, maybe that's why!

That friend with the 87 GXL is me I wasnt a member yet so phil posted it for me. I just figured I would be a smart *** and say some dumbass remark like that. I am new to the whole RX-7 thing and dont know where to begin. But I do want to put a turbo conversion on it if I can find one. ANYHELP where I can start I would appreciate.
Thanks

Deej; you cant run a decent turbo conversoin unless you replace the rotors. w/ the HKS and GReddy turbo kits, u can only run like 4 or 5 psi, and thats what turned me off about them.

you can hit the 13s w/ them mods. but, i suggest, that you dont ***** foot aroudn when searchin for HP on an nonturbo.

GUT the cats, (or remove the bitches), pull the carpet/stereo/AC/PS/sound deadener/spare tire, and get a STRAIGHT thru muffler. but not just ANY. not all mufflers are created equally.

Borla, too pricey, and too piston-oriented of a company. the XR1 i belive has the several perforated tubes in the core, w/ fiberglass packing. is that right?

well Stay away from all fiberglass packed mufflers, the hot exhaust from a rotary is about 1600* and will burn out the 'glass packing. and our **** likes to flow fast, so dont get a muffler with baffles like flowmasters.

i would suggest getting a lightweight, stainless steel, big bore, straight thru, stainless steel mesh packed, un-louvered muffler.
some options are:

Apex N1
Arospeed, tuneable Bomb series
5Zigen fireball
Tanabe medallion

get the K&N FIPK for our car, and figer out a way to route cold air to it. otherwise, ill suck the hot air inside the engine bay, and that will negate all the HP u just gained from ur free flowing filter.

be carefule with the slicks. you will need to strengthen your Diff and trans mounts, probalby ur engine mounts too. Energy suspenion makes good ****. be carefule that you dont snap an axleshaft either. you will probably want a good 4 or 6 puck clutch to run slicks and get good launchs.

rules to remember:

every 10lbs shaved from your car is like 1 additional HP
Every 1 lb of rotatoinal mass removed from ur pullyes is like 1 HP
wheel hop will hurt your car
speed costs money, how much are u willin to spend???

That's good to know, since I'm running basically the same setup on my car. I have a full Racing Beat exhaust in the mail....still searching for one more muffler...

Why get N/A when u can get Turbo??? why get turbo when U can get NOS. Why get nos when u can get v8 for cheaper. WhY? Why do people buy CRXs and race them out when thier slow as ****. Because its fun and anything can be made to go fast. If he wanted a cheap 13second car then Im sure he can just buy one thats already hitting high 13s for cheaper than even a turbo11

My GX that I crashed had a rebuilt engine, KN air filter, and a Racing beat exhaust. It ran mid 14's - I didnt know if it was ported or not, people said there was no way i could do that on a stock engine, but I dont think it was ported I had way too much low end power, and way to good gas milage. It was a beautiful engine/car RIP.

-Daryl

The GXL I have now probably runs 17's, though it runs smooth, it just doesnt have the kick like my last one - most likely because of the worn out clutch, not 100% sure though.

Whats up guys i saw this and wanted to put my word in.My best time is 14.19 and from what i saw for the upgrades--im not sseeing mid 14s out of this car.3"exhuast is overkill--its more weight all you need is 2 " to 2 1/2"---no race cat---its worthless ,It want pass an inspection, and just slows you down.--I see no mention off injectors or upgraded fuel pump.---thats a must. What kind of clutch?what kind if ignition?I have done as much tech to this car as there is right now and shes not in the 13s---when i see a 13 second slip ---i will buy you a beer and shake your hand!Because you have earned it.

YALL TALK ABOUT SPEED... BUT TO GET TO THOSE SPEEDS WITH AN N/a u lose reliability... am i right?or am i wrong. i have an n/a myself and i wouldnt mine doing things like that to my car but i want a full interior. lol before u do all of that stuff to the car go to ur essentials.
~rebuild tranny
~new aftermarket clutch
either rebuild or buy a new drive shaft
maybe go with a lightened steel flywheel. IMO that what i would do first to get the car in shape
then go exhaust and the rest of what u said.
