86 speaker question

I am going to order and new radio and speakers today for my 86 FC and I was wanting make sure of the rear tower speakers size. Are they 6"? I know they only make 6.5 now, I know the fronts are 4" in the dash. Just makin sure. If I order 6.5 for the back will they work?

I did read the sticky, it said 4" or 6" for the towers.

get 8" subwoofers or 6.5" speakers for the back. If you want a sweet setup go for what im trying to do.

-Component speaker kit in the door panels (requires custom work if you do not have a spot for speakers on the doors like me.
-Or just replace the under dash speakers with a good brand and get tweeters and hook up all these speakers to a 4 channel amplifier or a aftermarket stereo headunit
-For the rear get two 8" subs and hook them up to a 2 channel amp
-Dynamat or foam up the towers on the inside for better acoustics

I think this is a good setup if your looking for great sound without a bulky sub box in the back and also keeping the car looking stock

Naww.. you can actually fit SOME 8 inchers in there depending on the basket/frame they use on the speaker. Some 8's are a little large and won't fit.. but a little coaxing with a grinder will fit them in. My last 7 had 8's installed... but I can't remember for the life of me what model or even make they were. Getting good sound out of those areas was the hard part. Dynamat does very little in that area.... but helps.

Some of the cars had 4" and some had 6.5" in the rear. Depended on the model year and the equipment package.

If you have 4's, goto a junkyard or crutchfield and grab some 6.5" adapter plates and you're set to go.

Well i have made a sheet metal plate so i could put 6x9's in,currently my setup is

-custom mounted 6x9 rockford fosgate.
-custom mounted power acustic bullet tweeters in the doors.
-custom box housing my 15" kicker L7 powered by a kicker 1000w(900rms)
I like a little "bump" in my music

I recently placed 6.5'' in the rear speaker tower but the mounting plate which came with the speaker was as flimsy as can be so I made my own mounting plate out of red oak wood that is 1" thick and fills the whole perimeter of the speaker tower. The wood plate fits inside the tower and mounted with screws all around. To get the wood plate in the tower I had to cut it in two equal pieces and is in the shape of a U with the sides bent outward to match the tower top.The sound difference is dramatic in comparison and makes the speaker act as if it were in a home stereo as they are mounted in wood too.

pics. i just came up with a great idea to mount a 6x9 in the tower and i wanna see if its close to what you've done.

also my idea would be to cut along the tower at an angle like this / so i end up with an oval shape to mount the 6x9's.

Type R are more than double the price of type S but I think they are just as good. I dont have the power to have them at breaking point anyway. If the speakers distort (not very often) I just change the settings on the CD player. Gotta love pioneer

I use MB Quart 8" woofers in the rear towers. They drop right in. Dynamat on inside of rear towers. I use MB Quart 6.5 component woofers in the doors and I made custom brackets for tweeters in the stock dash locations. 800 watt rms Kenwood amp in the rear bin. Dynamat on the doors.

The stock rear tower speakers from the factory were either 4" or 6", NOT 6.5". A die grinder will let you install 6.5". Also there are provisions on s4 models to put 6" speakers in the upper middle of the doors (verts had them there more often than coupes) but you will need to cut a hole in the door panels and use the grilles that come with the speakers. Again, a die grinder will let you put 6.5" there as well. Make sure you run all new speaker wires, if you try to connect your head unit to the stock radio's connector, you will be running it through the factory amps (not a good idea).

I have a 10" but dont want the bulky box in the back. I was thinking about putting it in a cubby hole. Has this been done before? Effective?
