86' rebuild wont start

After following these instructions:

http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/2n...p_breakin.html

My car is still having trouble starting. It tries to catch, makes a ton of smoke, then just rolls over on subsequent attempts. I pull the egi fuse, clear it out, then try again. It seems to be flooding badly.

I removed the emissions kit and ran my own new fuel lines. I noticed the old fuel filter was installed reverse of the way my new one is. The flow listed on my filter indicates i have it on the right way. (see photo)

also, i did not reinstall the fuel fitting pictured below, as it was excluded in the emissions removal (as I understood it) is this correct? it appears that the fitting reduces fuel pressure. Is this something that is required to start?

Who rebuilt that smoking, flooding engine.

Go to the Mazdatrix site and then to the fuel section. That device is meant to bleed off the pressure in the fuel rails once the engine is turned off....to help prevent any leaking injector from flooding the engine when the engine is just sitting there. Get it? Yes.

Car rolls over. Got a video of that?

A well renowned shop in TN build the engine. I think the real issue is in the backyard rebuil of the other components by yours truly. I'm going to put the thing back on there.

Check the basics. It sounds like you are getting fuel (possibly way to much) and spark. Is is strong or weak spark? Fully charged battery? What do the plugs look like?

Every rebuild I've seen smokes for the first minute or two after starting. I use petroleum jelly to hold things in place when assembling that causes quite a bit.

Ive got a strong spark from the leads, new battery, new plugs. I think this is an issue of too much fuel. The previous owner had the fuel filter installed backwards. Is this a method for reducing fuel pressure for tired injectors or just an "f-up"?

That would just be an "eff up." There shouldn't be a reason to reduce fuel pressure. The FC is already set up to reduce pump voltage at idle.

The two things pictured are to prevent flooding after shutting off the car. That would lead me to believe that the car had leaking injectors. Did you have them cleaned or tested?

If you really need to get it started, you can pull start, but that would just get it going after the rebuild. There is no guarantee that it will start normally after that.
